Well, with all the fuss about the codex I figured I would stop lurking and start posting.  Plus, I have an idea.  I read in the online version of the Blood angels about renaming special characters and repainting them but keeping the same rules.  It goes like this exactly

"...To Represnt the various commanders of the successors, you can use the named Blood Angel characters such as Dante and Mephiston and simply come up with new names."  So, my question is would any of you dakkaites mind with an opponet used say a differently colored special character and used for a different army as long as it were in the same army list or successor chapter.  My idea came to me thusly using Huron Blackheart as an IW special character I just used the name Warsmith Antiochus.  Using my leet skills in paint I came up with a preliminary sketch of what he would look like.  Its really just a cut and paste, but please tell me what you think and I just might end up doing it.  I think it would be fun.

Paint jobs make no difference.A pink special character can still be Lord Mephiston, or
Lord Mister Fist On. the important stuff seems to be wargear and distinguishing him on
the battlefield from other parts of your army. So if he looked like just another tacmarine
I think it would be too confusing.

But grab a model and paint him whatever.

The same is in DA dex.

I am converting my own version of Eldrad and painting him for my own Craftworld to represent its most Venerable Farseer.

Go for it.

Frankly, I think more people should do this in response to GeeDub ramping up special characters and making them the most seen HQ choice for their respective armies. Pretty tired of The Thousand Clones of Eldrad taking to the field, but "counts as" Eldrad / Huron / Azrael are much more interesting and are just using the rules, not obliterating fluff / sense at the same time

Nice pic by the way. I'm contemplating a Huron "counts as," which would basically be a spooky chaos guy with an underslung heavy flamer

Thanks for the info guys, since Im in it more for the modeling then anything else sounds like every special character I take will be modded to fit ito my IW army.  Why not, it will be fun!

Although, the only thing I'm worried about is doing all this and if/when I got to a tourny the moderators saying I can't take them because they don't look like so and so.  One more thing where is a better place to post my images on the web, and how can i get to just post an image, instead of an URL.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I have a Saim Hann Eldrad. Initially because hwe was the only Farseer miniature worthy of the name. I replaced his sword hand with a pointing (casting) hand and the head of his staff with a spearhead. He was juast my Farseer, nopw he is that, or Eldrad again, as I see fit.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

How does taking one special character "obliterate" fluff and taking others not? Marines get a huge number of special characters where Eldar get a pitiful few.
If I want to field a farseer that represents the most venerable of my craftworld, what's wrong with taking Eldrad? I have no other choice than taking a regular farseer. It's be like saying you can represent Huron, but can only use the regular captain rules, unless you're playing his specific legion.
Eldrad, BTW is dead, so just accept that the special character represents a powerful psyker, not Eldrad.

Weirdly enough, you actually agree with me but I must have been unclear!  Every eldar army being led by "Eldrad Ulthran, Farseer of Ulthwe Craftworld" the actual character with fluff and a name and etc makes me sad and I think "obliterates" any concept of fluff or continuity, etc.  You said the magic word yourself - "represents" - that makes utilizing the rules of special characters to still create unique characters of your own - in your case, "the most venerable [farseer] of [your] craftworld" - acceptible and the most interesting response to GeeDub's idea to trash customizability further by making a few named characters miles better.  Just there you make it clear you're using the rules alone and making the character your own, not just slapping another clone of Mephiston down because his rules are the hotness.

Course on the other side I give credit to people who use special characters because they actually like the characters and strive to use them fluffily.  I.e. Eldrad actually leading a host of Ulthwe (yeah, he's dead so this is a "historic re-enactment" ), and such.  The DAngel characters oddly funnel right into this vain, because their armies must vary depending on which you take ... (right?)

GW's site once contained several people's custom "Azraels" for use for the 2nd Founding chapters. They all had their own take on the combi-plasma, the lion helm, and the Sword of Secrets. As long as you tell your opponent, "See this cool guy, he uses the rules for Azrael" there isn't a problem.
