Subject: Can Mech Stormtroops list work??

Hey all, I was wondering if a storm trooper heavy mech guard would work? I was thinking something along the lines of the following list: HQ SO w/plasma pistol, power sword, x3 plasma guns, Vet Medic Chimera w/extra arm., smoke, multi-laser and heavy bolter Total: 204pts Sent. w/ lascannon 55pts TROOPS 3x8 STs w/ vet Sgt w/power weapon. 2 STs w/ plasmaguns Chimera w/ extra arm., smoke, multi-laser and heavy bolter Total: 612pts ELITES x6 STs w/ vet Sgt w/power weapon and meltabomb. 2 STs w/ meltaguns Chimera w/ extra arm., smoke, multi-laser and heavy bolter Total: 189pts FAST ATTACK Sent. w/ lascannon 55pts Sent. w/ lascannon 55pts HEAVY Leman Russ w/ smoke, extra arm, 3 heavy bolters. Total: 163 Leman Russ w/ smoke, extra arm, or 3 heavy bolters. 163pts PTS Total= 1496 Thanks, Chappy P

It'll have a tough time, but it can work -- I've fielded something similar, but only at 750 / 1000 pts -- two stormie squads, sentinels, one russ.
The main trouble it runs into is the ease of taking its scoring units out of action, particularly in close combat. Since a lot of your points are tied up in non-scoring transports, those small squads are prime targets in objective games.
Also, the preponderance of assault cannons and whirlwinds in Marine armies, and of AP4 weapons in other armies, gives them trouble because of the Toughness of 3. On this note, the power weapons on the VetSarges (and the VetSarges themselves, really) are a waste. Just make sure to use your officers leadership.
On a more optimistic note, things that do work in this army: the sheer amount of armor scares the pee out of most opponents, though this works better with three russes at 1500. Also, you're not wasting as many weapon shots by moving your stormies as you would mechanized Guard infantry, so you have more flexibility.
I would suggest running this as a "Delta Force and the Marines" idea. Use Stormies and tanks as a firebase of sorts, and have several infiltraiting and/or deepstriking Vet squads for havoc-wreaking -- keeps the elite feel, more effective tabletop.

Ouch! I hate thunder storms!
I posted a reply and the storm temporarily knocked out my Internet!
Anyway, Thanks for the reply Adso, here is a new revised list for everyone's perusal.
Doctrines: Drop Troops, Veterans, Grenadiers, Iron Discipline
HQ JO w/Iron Discipline, x2 plasma guns, Vet Standard Chimera w/extra arm., smoke, multi-laser and heavy bolter Total: 169pts
ELITES: 3x5xVets, VS, 3 Plasma guns - 225pts
TROOPS: 3x10 STs w/2xPlasma guns, Chimera w/EA, smoke, multi-laser and heavy bolter - 639pts
HEAVY: 3xLeman Russ w/3 heavy bolters - 465
PTS Total= 1498
What do you guys think??
Thanks, Chappy P!

Try one more re-tool -- you've dug yourself a very unfortunate hole. Without the sentinels, you have absolutely no effective anti-tank or anti-TMC. Monoliths, Raiders, and Fexes can now eat this list alive. To afford some, I would
1) Give some of your suicide vets meltas rather than plasma. 2) Drop the extra armor on the Chimeras and the Vet Sarges, 3) Bring all three Stormtrooper squads back down to 8, or even to 6, men.
Without lascannon-toting infantry, Guard really needs those melta shots and armor-sniper Sentinels.
Oh, and it would be nice (though not entirely neccessary) to have the Honorifica....though since points are short, I can understand dropping it.

Ok again thanks for the repliy Adso:
Here is yet another revision of the Mech ST army:
Doctrines: Drop Troops, Veterans, Grenadiers, Iron Discipline
HQ JO w/Iron Discipline, x2 plasma guns, Vet Standard Chimera w/smoke, multi-laser and heavy bolter Total: 164pts
ELITES: 3x5xVets, VS, 2 Plasma guns - 195pts
TROOPS: 3x8 STs w/2xPlasma guns, Chimera w/smoke, multi-laser and heavy bolter - 564pts
Fast Attack: 2xSentinels w/Las-Cannon - 110pts (Separate units)
HEAVY: 3xLeman Russ w/3 heavy bolters - 465
PTS Total= 1498
I have striped down all the extra armor off the Chimera's, I brought the ST squads down to 8 and dropped all vet sergeants. I dropped 1 special weapon from each vet squad from the elites and I added back in 2 Sentinels with LasCannons.
So how about now??
I would like to get a Honorifica, but I really don't know where to get the 25pts. I don't feel comfortable losing anymore bodies. I think I will need to rely on drive by shootings with the plasma and just mass fire at the nearest enemy units and double up on beating down small sections of the enemy at a time. I am sure that some armies will give me fits, but there isn't a lot of mech Eldar or Tau where I play and I am the only one who has a godzilla nid army, so I should have any problems there.
Anyway, more comments are always welcome!
Thanks, Chappy P!

Nice! This list should kick serious Xenos and traitor rear if that's your local game. Here's a quick extrapolation of my 750/1000 point list to 1500.
HQ (232)
J/O with Iron Discipline, Honorifica, 2 Flamers. (81) HQ Squad: Veteran Standard Bearer. (11) Chimera with Hull Heavy Bolter (85)
Sentinel (Lascannon) (55)
ELITES (234)
6x Veterans: 3x Meltaguns, 3x Shotguns (78)
6x Veterans: 3x Meltaguns, 3x Shotguns (78)
6x Veterans: 3x Plasma Guns, 3x Shotguns (78)
TROOPS (555)
8x Stormtroopers, 2x Plasma Guns (100) Chimera with Hull Heavy Bolter, Multilaser (85)
8x Stormtroopers, 2x Plasma Guns (100) Chimera with Hull Heavy Bolter, Multilaser (85)
8x Stormtroopers, 2x Plasma Guns (100) Chimera with Hull Heavy Bolter, Multilaser (85)
FAST ATTACK (165)
Sentinel (Lascannon) (55)
Sentinel (Lascannon) (55)
Sentinel (Lascannon) (55)
HEAVY SUPPORT (310) Leman Russ with Hull H/B and Sponson Heavy Bolters, Battlecannon (155)
Leman Russ with Hull H/B and Sponson Heavy Bolters, Battlecannon (155)
Tactically, it operates by planting the Stormies in cover, often crouched near/behind their transports, since they never start the game in range. The Russes find someplace hull down, preferably on the flank with the heaviest enemy deployment, and lob cannon shots into enemy infantry and light vehicles -- it wreaks a special kind of havoc on a player I end up against regularly who loves his Dark Eldar Raiders, since open topped vehicles get extra-smacked down by templates. When the Vets drop, I start to advance my stormies in their transports or not, depending on what enemy threats remain. The sentinels are usually dead quick, but with luck they keep skimmers stunned for a turn or two, or knock out predators / vindicators / russes before they can get too close or get range.
If things get really desperate, the JO runs forward, flames something, and halts it for it least a turn with his own body. It's a pretty flexible force, but it does run into problems against large numbers of S6 or S7, AP4 weapons -- which can knock around the Chimerae, Infantry, and Sentiels almost equally. I imagine deepstriking Termies would smakc it around pretty badly, too.

Thanks again Adso!
Yeah the list would be primarily for Local game play, which again isn't totally made up of power gaming list.
Should I still keep the third Russ? I see that our list were rather similar, except that you have one less Russ...
Anyway, I like the fact that I will be able to put this together with some help from my friends, without costing me an arm and a leg!
Any other comments and or critiques are more than welcome
Thanks, Chappy P!

oh yes it can work very well one of our local league players has one and does quite well with it. IIRC it has 2 las sentinels a tech seer and 4 sevitors, 2 leman russ, a hell hound , 3 chimeras with autocannon/heavy bolter HK missle, extra armor dozers, track guards all full of grenadiers with melta/plasma his HQ and a squad of plasma toting infiltraiting scouts.

Thanks for the comments Mughi3! I was really hoping that this concept would work. I find that there are times in which I really want to do something for thematic purposes and/or fluff and it totally cannot work, but I am happy to hear that this particular army can work.
Anyway, any other comments, critiques and/or criticisms are more than welcome and appreciated.
Thanks, Chappy P!

I do a couple things differently, but same theme. I waste 40 points on carapace armour, so I can use all Karskin models, though. I do 4 flamers on a command section, assists in those horde opponents. I use only 6 man squads w/ two matching specials. I use an engiseer (no retinue) w/ chimera, it allows a DS vets to mount up in Alpha games.

Total: 163 Leman Russ w/ smoke, extra arm, or 3 heavy bolters. 163pts PTS Total= 1496 Thanks, Chappy P It's essentially Sisters of Battle without faith points and with worse troops. I would avoid. If you want to mech up, use normal guardsmen with heavy weapons. That actually works.
