Certainly not the most fun thing in the world, but it's one of the dumbest "combine all the really good units into one army" that you can see at a tournament.  And if GW keeps on not running escalation at their GT's here in the States, well this can do very bad things.

The Lootas are there just to be mean to people and handle skimmer lists.  Plus that much dakka is never a bad thing!

I figure through out the thread, I'll post up 1750 tournament lists that I come up with. Other people are welcome to put their own lists up too, may be better off than having a lot of different little threads for it.

That's the army concept that all future Ork armies of any size will be drawn from. 1500 points armies will take what you've fielded there except only 2 x 12 Lootas and 3 x 16 Stormboyz, etc.

I really, really don't think lootas are worth it. Lets just say you get 39 shots, that's 13 hits, and 4.33 glances against an armor 12 skimmer. Of that, 1/3 of the hits will destroy the vehichle if it doesn't have upgrades, resulting in 1.44 dead skimmers, and you only paid 195 points, and you probably just bagged yourself a 90 point skimmer. Now, we'll go for average and say you get  26 shots, which gets you 8.66 hits, and 2.88 glances and .96 dead skimmers.... and you still paid 195 points for that..... and that's only against eldar.... against tau, you'll never be able to see them to shoot them. I just think that in todays version of 40k, mobility is too important for expensive immobile units.

You have no other way to kill tanks at range reliably.

Tau skimmers have to keep moving, the Storm Boyz will see to that. I'm wondering what kind of jungle safari boards you guys play in. I've invariably got at least 25% terrain or more, but nothing that a set of Skimmers that moves only 12" a turn (Tau) are going to consistently be able to hop in between.

I've played against a lot of lists, and not once have I seen a board or a Tau army that could deny you any targets all game.

I'm not too thrilled about the change to waaagh and the lack of change to the boyz initiative. With the way GW is kitting out marines now (Dark/Blood Angels, Chaos - probably all sooner than later) with Bolters AND Bolt pistols/CCW, those stormboy mobs have a hard time assaulting a unit of 10 marines. Assuming these new-style marines, you have to suffer 20-odd attacks before you swing. You are down 4-5 boyz right off the bat, and that assumes you didn't take any fire on the way in. The 13 boyz swinging back are only expecting to drop 4 marines, and against a competent opponent, that's probably enough for him to disengage from your powerklaw.

Second round, you're going to suffer another 2-3 dead orks before you swing, and you've now also lost your furious charge. Figure 10 boyz swing back, you're lucky to kill 2 marines. Sure, you might grind them down, but you're losing combat effectiveness the whole way.

It's even worse with the trukk-bound mobs. They only start with 12 boyz, so running into 10 basic marines is going to cost them half their number before they even take a swing. It used to be that 10 trukk boyz could hit 10 marines, lose 2 boyz and wipe out the marines. Now, between the initiative loss, choppa loss, and change to marine equipment, 12 boyz aren't even likely to win the first round of combat - even with their +1 S.

Not a fan so far.



And that's with the larger stormboy squads.

In your example, the end of the combat sees the Marines dead to a man and the Stormboyz with 8-10 remaining, including the Nob, and that's assuming the Marine player is able to pull casualties to disengage the Nob in the first round (not at all a given if the Nob is in the middle of the line). I don't see how that's a disastrous outcome.

Besides, your example is terribly hypothetical. How many DA/BA armies do you see compared to vanilla Marines? And how many 10-man CSM squads have you seen in Chaos armies compared to smaller Plague or Noise Marine squads?

Edit: Crap, it didn't even occur to me that BA/DA Marines won't even have the additional CCW in the first place.

BA/DA's still only have 1 attack on their marines, only Chaos Marines, Plague Marines, Bezerkers, and Noise Marines are going to have 2 attacks each when charged.

This is why shooting is important, and why the Lootas are there. Arguably, I could change out the Sluggas in Trukks to 20 man Shoota Mobz, makes the model count go up nicely too.
