Just moved to Austin, TX and low and behold, my apartment is a couple blocks away from the biggest gaming shop in the city. I played 40k extensively in 2nd edition, but stopped when 3rd came out. Just picked it back up with the new 4th edition codex, and since 75% of my old models are Eldar, I am going the apparently cheesy/lazy route. I have been inundating myself with all the wisdom that I can glean from here, and it has proved to be an immeasurable help, since theorycrafting with my opponents at the store yeilds what I believe to be less than candid responses. I hope to enjoy numerous spirited debates and look forward to picking the brains of some fine 40k players. Cheers.

Welcome to dakka! I was pretty much the same way and bypassed most of third edition. The original 2nd edition Necron Raider models drove me out of the hobby as I thought they looked so awful, but the newer Necron models towards the end of third edition are what brought be back in (robot skeletons woohoo).

Ya, what killed it for me after 2nd edition was seeing all my wicked psykers and special characters get their stats downgraded into normality. Meh, I don't lament it too much anymore, the 2nd edition days of Mephiston or Ahriman running around the table singlehandedly annihilating my opponents are over, and now I have a reason to dust off my Falcon tanks and jetbikes, since speed is golden for 3rd and still 4th edition. Its a new game, same theme, and even more fun since it doesn't take 6 hours for a 2000pt battle. So far I'm completely enthralled with it, and I can't wait to get some high competition level play under my belt.
