First of all I would like to say that i just started to play this game a few weeks ago. Have been collecting and building my first army. Liked the idea of having a swarm of enemies and multiple attacks on the board. Looking to go CC swarm. Will most likely construct a zilla list after perfecting this. Starting with 1000 pts.
HQ:
Flyrant 75 (winged 40, toxin sacs 12, enhanced senses 10, TL devourer 12, TL devourer 12, warp field 35) = 196
"Read good things about this guy multiple places. wanted the wings to keep him mobile to range around my fast attackers. 12 attacks at 18" sounded good. Not sure I need the enhanced senses what with the twin-linked feature. I added the toxin sacs to be shooting strength 5 with the devourers, not sure if it will really help against the average model. Couldn't resist taking the warp field, it just sounded too good"
Heavy:
Gunfex 85 (enhanced senses 8, VC 35, BS 20) = 148
"Not really sure if i need to add the additional wound due to low points available"
Fast attack:
3x Ravener 30 (Talons & Claws) 3x 40 = 120
"I really like this unit, but they are expensive! Very fast to charge with the Flyrant. I thought about adding the devourer bio-weapon to shoot on the way in, but I don't think it's work it."
3x Warrior 14 (winged 14, Talons 4, Claws 6) 3x 38 = 114
"I realize these guys fall short of other CC units, but I could find no other way to keep synapse coverage on the fast raveners, stealers, and hormies"
Troops:
8x Stealers 16 (Talons 4) 8x 20 = 160
"Love these guys. Have heard talk about not taking talons on them, but I really like the multiple attacks it offers."
12x Hormies 10 = 120
12x Hormies 10 = 120
Total = 978 pts
Suggestions welcome...

If you want to go heavy CC you should drop the Hormagaunts for more Genestealers. Also, lose the Warriors for more Raveners.
I've played several Tyranid lists recently and can tell you that Genestealers and Raveners rock face.

Raveners are a little vulnerable to bolters, but like gojira said...they and stealers are nasty.
Also, you don't need to keep stealers in synapse range.

Yeah, I may lower the hormy count. They are primarily in there to tie things up on two flanks, and maybe get some shots in, until I can storm with the better troops.
Does anybody think I spent too many points on my HQ in a 1000 pt list?

As far as I'm concerned the Flyrant is a must have. However, I would get rid of Warp Field because you'll be taking a lot of AP2 shots and the 6+ Invuln save won't do much for you.

I like fighting 3+ save flyrants, much much easier to down in 1 turn of shooting than their warp field sisters. Not just because my chaos have a lack of AP2 but also because my opponent rolling 1 or 2 is a lot more likely than just a 1. It is a lot of points though, and gojira may be hinting at the fact that the flyrant will suck fire and will die - letting the stealers and raveners slam into combat and start grinding through.
Cred for taking the hormies, but would they be better as a combined mob of 20 or there abouts? Easier to push with the flyrant before she bites it, and the only unit that REALLY needs the synapse control (the raveners benefit greatly from the no instant death thing).
The stealers really need extended carapace, more than need scytals I think. YMMV but I would love it if my bolters tore through the stealers I always fight, instead of bouncing off solid 4+ save rolls.
Finally, the warriors seem like a weak unit here, but maybe they're more important to boost the synapse (particularly after flyrant falls) and absorb some firepower. Sadly again no extended carapace means heavy bolters can go to work against them, but that's one upgrade you can't give 'em so meh.
If I had my way I'd see another unit of stealers in there, simply for how nightmarish they are for me to deal with. Then your opponent really has a problem - blast the flyrant in his face, or deal with the raveners zooming in, or the multiple squads of stealers fleeting over? A choice I hate personally

Yeah, I never thought of it that way. I guess the flyrant could be bait...
I could take just 1 brood of hormies, but I still have to keep the raveners in synapse or they would go instinctual... Not good.
I never thought about the fact that having extended carapace would give the stealers an effective 50/50 save.
Why is it that when you read the games workshop site, they say quantity over quality over and over again... Because seams to me if you really want to have a huge quantity you have to take a bunch of gaunts and they just aren't that effective...

u could try taking a broodlord and some Genestealers for its retinues and infiltrate them to help with synapse.

As far as the Broodlord is concerned, I have only ever used him to draw fire. He and his boys really give your opponent a hard decision: they either focus down the Lord and his retinue, or they shoot the rest of your assault force. If they shoot your Lord, then they aren't shooting your Flyrant, hormagaunts, genestealers, raveners...etc. If they don't shoot the Lord, then they have just done you a huge favor by letting him close in and start raping things. He really suffers with no Fleet, but if your opponent ignores him, or simply doesn't put enough firepower into his squad to nullify them in a turn, he can really do some damage.

You're full of it, Blackheart. CC Warriors? A single 'fex? This army is not "ezmode," mate. Learn to read the whole list instead of seeing "nids" in the title and immediately thinking cheese.
