I just got it yesterday after an agonizing wait and couldn't put it down. Wow is the only word that comes to mind besides the profanity. Now I didn't really believe that this was the end for the regiment, but the actions and reactions of the characters made believe that they thought it was the end. I really hope Shoggy pulls through as he's been a favourite character since the first book. The way Rawne steps up to his new duties is very nice. He's always been an interesting character, but the shift in him in the last few novels is believable and IMHO makes him a better character. The line from Gaunt, "Give me a boost Eli" had me chuckling.
Ok so once or twice I started to really believe that Gaunt was gone, but in my heart I knew it couldn't be. Though for me this didn't spoil it as the appearance of Soric blew me away. Totally wasn't expecting that. Its kind of like that show Dexter. In both season finales you could sorta guess the end result, but in both cases something more important was revealed that wasn't even hinted at. The last time the Ghost series shocked me this much was the loss of Corbec. I still miss that character and I believe I shed a few tears the first time I read that bit.
Though I wouldn't be happy about it, it only seems appropriate for Meryn to make it. With Rawne and Gaunt genuine comrades and Cuu and Feygor long dead Meryn is really the last mean/badass character who really only looks out for himself. Its nice that Ludd is finally getting fleshed out as a character. The sad lost puppy commissar cadet routine get old the first time it appeared and until this book I didn't think he was hard enough to be a political officer. Its nice to see his attempts and failures at securing his position and not miraculously becoming mean and tough over night. I started laughing after reading the bit about the note Hark had left in Ludd's pocket. It seems that a baneblade or warhound is required to kill Hark. More and more he seems like the embodiment of the text book GW commissar. Its nice at the end so see that he is really sorry about Soric. He did what he was required on Herodor, but it still haunts him and theres still humanity left in him.
I hope that Eszrah survives as he is one of the most unique characters I've ever read about in any BL novel. The thread with Merrt was really nice. For awhile now he's seemed to me the most tragic character even among the ghosts. He had nothing but his skill and that was taken away from him. He deserves whatever vindication he is looking for.
All in all I found it a great edge of your seat read. Certainly not the best nor my fav in the series. A good read though and rather sad conclusion. Nearly 50% losses of such a small regiment and Gaunt blind. Perhaps the Ghosts will get some garrison time to strengthen themselves, though knowing their luck they won't. It would be nice to see the Vitrians sometime. They were a pretty cool regiment.
