Subject: Looking for Primer

Alright, so I bought some Armory primer. Now, I'd used the stuff a few years ago and didn't think it was that great, not bad, just nothing special. I usually used GW's brand as, well, it always worked out well for me. Well when I opened the Armoury can the spray head flew off into the wilderness not to be found. GW is now charging $15 for a can of spray paint.
Thus I pose this question to you guys: What's a decent brand of primer that has nothing to do with those companies? If it can be found in a hardware store or something that would be great too.

I've used Armory, but you really have to be careful with it. I
have a few models that had primer that blew chunks (literally).
I don't know if it's because I sprayed improperly, or if the
weather made it bad.

I use a sandable auto primer.
Brand name is Dupli-Color. You can get it at any AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts. You might even be able to get it at different auto stores. The stuff is the most clingy primer I have EVER used. Imagine old GW Black Primer with WAY more kling. You can even prime in slightly cooler weather wihout a single problem.
The colors come in Black, Dark Grey, Medium Grey, and White. All are brilliant and if you end up with resin models it will be a must, as no GW or Armory primer will truely stick to resin.
Seriously, give it a try.
This is what the can looks like. Make sure it says Sandable Primer and you have the right stuff.
Price where I live is $4.44 per can.

Thanks for that. Why does it have to be sandable? I've
done resin models with Armory before. Even though it's
sealed will it rub off?

It needs to be sandable because it keeps the surface from drying slick. If it dries slick you will have a really hard time painting acrylics over it.
There is grit to the surface...but you can't see it or feel it with your fingers. It doesn't interfere with the smoothness of the final paint either. It just gives your paint something to adhere to.
Aslo, keep in mind, I'm not saying all primer needs to be sandable. I'm just saying that you need the sandable primer from the brand I use, as I know it is the stuff that works.

I've used a few different brands of auto primer, and I'll never go back.
Like Kej said above, you can even spray in (slightly) sub-par temperatures without problem.
I get my current primer from WalMart... I don't recall the name of it, but it's a rather generic brand for about $2.50 a can.
It's a blue can. I can tell you that much.
I can get the name later, when I'm at home.
If anybody wants the name of it, email me. I'll respond.

I just started using White Krylon Primer I picked up at Wal-Mart in the spray paint section. It works like a charm and is what I used to prime my God Bless the Infantry entry.

I posted a similar question a few months ago because of Armory Primer. The overall answer from this site and face to face was that Armoury white primer should be avoided at all costs.
Since then I've been quite happy with Krylon's results. Much cheaper, more readily available, and I get what I want from it.

I buy this really cheap wal-mart brand Flat black spray paint, called color place. I think it cost less than a buck and it works really well, I have never had issues going over it with either GW, GW foundation or Vallejo Game color paint.
I am on a budget due to being married and having a kid, so I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Chappy P!

Kej is totally right. I use the same stuff from AutoZone, and it sticks like glue to any plastic surface. The stuff is amazing and I would never use anything else on resin. If your wondering what it looks like on a model, just check out my Plastic Baneblade to Stormblade tread and you can see my model primed black with the stuff. Its only $4.69 at AutoZone, and it blows away the fake GW Primer. Also, for the people that don't know, there is no primer in the GW so called primer can. That is why the label had to be changed a few months back. If you remember, the cans read GW Black Primer, now all the cans say GW Chaos Black. That's because they got in trouble for falsely advertising the incorrect product. They never sold primer, just there normal black mix in a spray form. There are different chemicals in primer that require a distributer to carry special types of insurance for storage of the cans. I'm guessing GW did not want to fork out the extra cash for such a small part of their overall business. I know these facts because I deal with paints and primer for my business and we carry special insurance for storing and housing primers. These are federal laws that all business have to listen too. Hope this helps clear up the GW primer problem and get you the correct stuff.
