So, I want to get rid off all the Tau stuff I have laying around.

The army is going to be all black with glowing bits. Im thing of some sort of "night strike" cadre.

First tings are these PIP suits.

You can see the glowing guns and shieldgen along with the optics.
I still need to highlight the black and do the glowing jets at the back.

Comments and questions welcome.

I love the glow effect you have on them but no matter how well you pull it off they will always look unfinished if you dont do something on the black.

Even if you went with a really dark grey and highlighted a bit that would be better IMO. You could keep them black and and use grey highlights and some battle damage to break it up a bit for a ceremic look which would be tight as hell.

To me though as is they just look unfinished, which is a shame cause like i said that glow is well done.

I think you need some detailing, like those silly varying-thickness lines that GW puts over all their Tau, maybe in grey or the colours you've already got on. Also, just because they're nightfight doesn't mean you can't have a dark gunmetal in detail areas.

The glow is pretty wicked.

I agree, more detail. Black would work out great, You just need to get some highlights on it. Not BT highlighting, but at least some dark grey to show off some of the model. I like the direction though. And if you can pull it off it'll be a very cool looking army/project. Oh and be sure to matt varnish these bad boys to really give them a night fight look, the glare/gloss (I understand the flash and all) will sort of kill the fun of it in the wrong light otherwise.

Yeah I haven't touched the black yet. Highlights are on the way I assure you.

Finished the highlighting black on the Team Leader.

The flash washes it out a bit. It's more subtle in real life.

I think I'd like to see some muted red detailing. Some of the normal 'tau lines' could do the trick here and there.

I'd like to see some of the lining cleaned up some as well, it looks thicker in some places and thinner and others. A more uniform look would pull it off a bit better.

Looking good.

Finished off the suits.

@ GD I think you and I were thinking the same thing with the red. I did some Tau lines on 2 of the suits and they came out ok.

Is the PIP suit on the right slipping on something? He looks REALLY over balanced forward due to the angle of his legs and body, and the fact his head seems to be looking down.
Might just be the angle of the picture, but it sort of looks like he is perhaps competing in an ice skating competition or something.

Could we see them in a more 'natural' setting for the concept ^_^? A dark backdrop of some sort?

Be sure to hit them with a matt varnish for that glare.

They definitely look the part for what you had in mind for them. Should be interesting to see how well this translates to the firewarriors.

Got 4/12 Fire Warriors done.

Experimented a bit with the tau lines on the guns.

I'm not quite happy with the guns any ideas for improvement?

I expeimentet a bit with the army designer of DOW and black and red is a pretty cool colour combination for Tau and Kroot. Your Fire Warriors are great. And I like your basing. For improvment suggestion maybe a special army badge?

it is cool, however I have a strange stigma against black armored armies. Seems too easy to just primer it then paint some details on. Or perhaps Im just jealous cause I cant to that with any of my armies' color schemes.

those fire warriors look awesome, great job dude, wish i could paint like that

black is imo the hardest colour ( along with red ) to make it look cool, so once again, you did good to make it look cool

Thanks for the comments.

School has sidetracked me a bit lately. But, I should have the rest of the FW squad and their Devilfish done by the end of the month.

I think I'm going to make my life easy and just seal up the fish and skip painting the interior and magnetizing the doors.

Two things, one serious, one not really.

1) The blue from the plasma rifles seems a little heavy for source lighting (I am assuming you intend to have the plasma glow coming from inside the slits there.) It might work a little better toned down, with a white interrior with blue wash inside, and just a light blue edging on the slits. I think the temptation is to make the glow too bright and cover a too wide area, which the eye doesn't like because it ignores the possible paths the light can take (being set into the gun, not emanating from it's surface.)

2) Isn't sort of required to have the little bull's eye in the middle of their chest painted a different color? How will we know where to place our bolter rounds?

Looks very nice otherwise. The stealthy look really works well with tau, who really should fight in the manner of a "modern" sneaky army, as opposed to the "Here I am, armored in day glow orange!" marines etc.

Thia is actually the first Tau paint scheme that I have looked at and thought... "man that is cool!" you actually make the tau look a little fearsome (we know they hit like anorexic schoolgirls in hth though). I think the blur could be tightened up a little. It looks good, but looks like there might be a little too much light coming from it. Its hard to say from just pics. The red markings as a contrast is genius.
