Greetings,

Not being able to make any more of the Mk5 marines as I don't have any more of the heads, I got bored and decided to paint a Sons of Guilliman marine. He's a sergeant of some sort, maybe for a command squad or something should I decide to make another army, I'm still unsure if I want to or not yet.

Anyway, here he is:

Enjoy,

Nice painting.
I've never been able to achieve a satisfactory white.

Trick with white : Thick coats or layers.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

A thick coat will never get you a 'satisfactory' white.

Thin layers are the key there. As is building up from other colors (blues, greys, browns depending on the white you are going for).

To SoG,

The model looks rather nice. Some cleaner highlights on the blue (easily fixed in this case) could go a long way to making it a tad nicer. I would also like to see another stage of highlight on the power weapon. You've got a nice start on it, I just don't get the 'bristling with power' feel from it though. I think the extra highlight might bring it out.

I've found that thin layers increase your likelyhood of flaws developing and chance of getting brush strokes showing up. However a good, well controlled, and steady hand can lay down one relatively thick layer of white that covers up base colors leaving a smooth, clean finish. However, if you make a mistake at a sharp bend, you make a very noticeable one. Not thick as in bubling up, but thick as in you shouldn't be able to see the base colors, as white lets other colors bleed through.

I like it a lot, though I feel like a few things could be made just a tiny bit better and the mini would really pop! a few suggestions:

-the bone parts: highlight them up to a mix of bleached bone and white, they'll look more real and go better with the overall "brightness" of the model

-the sword: get it up a little brighter on the edges ^^

really good job on the clean white/blue transitions, and the gold(yellow?) eagle heads go great with the mini!

Agree with Mr. Bombadidaloo in that a further highlight on the bone will help make it 'pop' more.

Great smooth transitions on the blue to white.

Scheme's a great change from the usual marines we see.

I did a bit more work on the marine and I think he'll be a one off for a while. I've got the parts to make another marine army in addition to the Mk5's I'm doing, but don't want to have to deal with white.

Here's what I've done:

I'd like to make him the leader of a LatD army, but they don't exist anymore :(.

I.... Can't tell what's different in the second set of pictures. Not that that's a bad thing mind you.

Nice work. If you've got an entire army painted up like this, that's gotta be an awesome sight.

I'm curious how he would've worked in a LatD army. What would've been the theme? Feel like indulging my curiosity?

I like it a lot. The shift between the blue and white is almost jarring it is so clean.
I definitely feel your pain about painting white, though I find with some help from Foundation paints, as well as accepting a gradual blend from darker to bright white by way of thin layers, it works out pretty well. I am not certain I would want to do it on a large army all at once though.
What I really like too is how clean the soft armor bits are. I always find those to be a giant pain to highlight.

@Arkion: There was a tale in the newest csm codex about a renegade SoG. That's where I got the idea from.

@Wehrkind: I had an army of these guys at one point, but traded them off and started work on the Angels of Vigilance.

Would you happen to be Khrangar from Warseer? Cause some of your conversions remind me of that dude's mk4 SoG, and your painting style is definitely reminiscent of his

Either way, very impressive painting, some real dedication to build an army, sell it and then build it anew, better than ever
