I was thinking maybe I should try and do a project that is way outside my skill and ability so that I might torment myself (being self-loathing and all) and came upon the idea of an all grot army. Problem is that all grots aren't really that interesting rule wise and I don't think there is a grot HQ.

So what I was considering was doing something of a count-as army using grots to represent Orks. To minimize confusion I would take no grots as listed. Instead of an Ork there would be two Grots per base and the two of them together would count as an ork. The Warboss would be (probably the Red Grot) a grot in a a big armored suit. For killa cans I have some Bauhas power armor suits that with some changes could work nicely.

So, am I to far out there? You know, there. Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

I think I remember seeing somebody did a grot army with Imperial guard stats, rules, etc.

I'd also considered something similar (before being discouraged by the new codex's rules for plain grots). Example: One grot sitting on another's shoulders, both waving weapons, counting as a sluggaboy. And one holding a shoota on his shoulder while another grot behind him fires it, together counting as a shoota boy. And so on.

Fluffwise I think it's fine - your boss is a mad runtherder, who has been doing odd experiments with his grot training which have resulted in unusually savage grots trained to fight in pairs.

Modellingwise, I see a couple of big issues:

- height - some opponents will grizzle if your count-as orks are shorter than 'real' orks. This isn't a problem if you go for grots on each other's shoulders as above, but for other grots where that doesn't make sense, you might want to do something like have them standing on boxes/ladders/stilts (fluffwise, this is so they can see the enemy better) or similar?

- models - for a whole army, your only obvious choice is WHFB goblins. Unfortunately, although there is a reasonable selection of plastic goblins, the new ones mostly have attached heads and arms and so aren't as convertable as the old night goblins - however the old wolf rider and 'plain' goblins are still avaialable and do have separate arms, heads etc

If you're going for a "two-fer" maybe you should wait
and see if they'll release a sprue for Grots? This should
curb your enthusiasm and give you time to return to a
sane(r) mentality.

I think it's a cool idea, though.

are people still holding their breath for plastic grots? I'd love to see such a kit, but think they're increasingly unlikely, with GW actively selling the metal ones

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

You might be better off making a grot cultist army with plastic night goblins.

Make the leader a hoomie, with robes of course. He will need a green face.

Because the grots are religiously motivated it can account for the IG statline you give them. And they get IG weaponry abilities because that is what they are carrying, excepting the odd grot holding a large flower. Yep the robes are yellow or orange.

I suggest a hoomie leader bcause the cult is not chaotic but an Ordo Xenos front recruiting disnfranchised grots (there must be a few) and turning them into catspaws for the =I=.

Alternately use a grot cult leader, though then you will have a harder job converting up weaponry forv the night goblin conversions. I stuill think orange robes and the occassional flower, or even a 'hippy' or two will be a nice touch.

Thanks for the thoughts. The height issue I will have to think about how to get around indeed. It's a long term project so I can wait a bit and see if they do anything for grots, model wise. I can still get the HQ and Killa Kans and such done in the meantime. When I start it maybe I'll try and put it on the blog board.

I could push it over the top and make it a Slaanesh themed grot army. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
