Subject: Alternatives to ork stormboyz GW bits pack?

Hello, recently I have begun work on a new 2,000 point ork army. In this army I will be including 40 stormboyz. However, I don't want to pay $18 for only 5 rokkit packs. I was wondering if there are any alternative bitz or simple conversions that others use for the stormboy packs. I may create a theme for my army and could eventually have the theme go along with whatever choice I make, so any themes are also welcome. I was thinking maybe an ork horde that killed a whole lot of space marines and now use parts of their armour/shoulder pads, with assault marine backpacks as stormboy packs. Any suggestions are welcome.

I can relate.. bought up 3 boxes of 8 stormboyz right when they were discontinued. other than looking on ebay for some cheap deals (they're available) you're kinda outta luck there. the stormboy pewter is cool enough to go ahead and use anyway but its going to be way more expensive now.
I suppose you could go the whole lootas perspective and use assault marine jetpacks or chaos raptor jetpacks but I don't know off the top of my head how they compare price wise

(This thread is being writte in the POV of a US resident... adjust for your local currency, etc.)
The new battlewagon bits in the UK looks great (never tried them, so I can NOT make a recommendation).
Check this out:
http://www.battlewagonbits.co.uk/shop/article_SM48/ASSAULT-JUMP-PACK.html?shop_param=cid%3D1%26aid%3DSM48%26
Space Marine Jump packs.
1 UK Pound each.
Wow! 40 UK Pounds for your jump packs.
That's 80 bucks.
Sure is expensive. Right?
Wrong.
If you buy them and use the as-is, it's STILL only $10 for 5 J-Packs. Still almost half the cost...
But wait. There's more!
We're talking Orks. They don't need to be pretty.
Assemble each pack & cut it in half, vertically.
Now, you can buy TWENTY packs for FORTY dollars... The Orks hobble stuff together, anyway, so you could make them look JUST RIGHT with a bit of trimming & some plasticard, etc.
Of course, shipping to the US is like $15 (or was that 15 pounds?). No problem.
Order $30 in bits & it's free shipping worldwide...
Buy some Ork bits you've been wanting and bump up the cost for the tree shipping. it might be cheaper than paying the shipping (and you get more stuff).
That's what I'm going to do.
Hope this helps.

If your in the UK I know another bits site:
http://www.bitzbox.co.uk/
and after the stormboyz box set went off sale I still got 2 from these guys:
http://www.gamingfigures.com/
They had to order them so maybe GW are still selling the old stock to independents. Other than that I like Eric's idea with the looted In-half marine packs.
Ork stuff always looks better when cobbled together.

yes, I too am cutting marine jump packs in half and adding some turbo-mekky bits to hide the hole - I mean, an ork can't weigh nearly as much as a power armoured marine, right?

Doesn't matter.
He could weigh 5 times as much... if an Ork BELIEVES it will work, then it will.

I agree with the SM jump packs, though not for monetary reasons, but rather because they look great and are an easy conversion. It's also a good way to create a Death Skull theme (you could also use a Marine powerfist on your nob as a klaw). You could mix it up with some Chaos Raptor bits too, or get really crazy and try and fit an Eldar warp spider pack or some swooping hawk wings (with the appropriate mek tinkering of course).
I got an old Chaos Raptor jump pack on one of the new nobs w/ power claw and it looks pretty good.

Ah young orker you must let the power of Mork and Gork fill your mind with the power of conversions.
Beakie assualt packs
Various rokkits bundled together from various armies IG, tau rokkits, etc...
IG sentinal engine turned upside down
Beakie dreadnought engine turned upside down (This is one I have on my stormboyz Nob.)
defiler engine turned upside down
Boyz riding tau drones
Boyz holding onto bunches of ballons ( the little plastic ones are great you can get them at any party supply store or dollar store.)
and of course you can always make your own. A plastic tube cut to length, a little greenstuff for the tip and piece of placticard for fins and your done.
Now I don't know the prices for this stuff but go through your bits box and start sticking things on backs to see if it works. You might be surprised what you come up with.

You should NEVER ever do it EVER because it's BAD and probably you will GO TO JAIL FOREVER, but you could make a mold of the pewter bits and cast your own.
Resin has the added benefit of weighing less, and thus not exploding like a pewter filled pipe bomb if dropped by accident, like my Lascannons do at the slightest provocation.
Are there any plans for all plastic Stormboyz? Please?

@Phryxis, Lascannons and other metal models have a tendency to seek out the edge of a table and beckon an unsuspecting arm to swipe across them. This is so that they can dive head long at the floor and watch the look of horror on your face as you contemplate gluing them for the fifth BLEEPING time.
Then GW releases Dev's in plastic the week after you bought your squad and lose it lol.

Make your own!
Just go to a store or order online something of similiar shape and size and resin cast them.

Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

How about using the backpacks of the burnaboyz?
Just add somekind of exhaust at the bottom.

Two words- Christmas ligts. Pull the bulb out, slice the wires off the socket, and you are left with a respectable rocket pack. For a little extra smoky pizzazz, you can glue half a Q-tip in the back. A little plasticard roughs it up enough to look orky, and that should do it. The price for something like 100 stormboy packs- 2-5 dollars. I'll have to get a few pictures of mine and post them once I get home.

I'd suggested that on another thread a few weeks ago, but there wasn't much enthusiasm. I still think it's a good idea, so long as you have a good source of burna back packs (e.g. all your local ork players who are making lootas instead)
The exhausty thingy at the bottom wouldn't be too hard. But I couldn't find a cone-shaped thingy to go on top (or at least, not lots of them) - I think it visually needs some extra top bulk too. So I gave up that idea and am going for converted marine jumppacks instead...

What about Bic pens? cut them to the right length. a little GS to close the end and make a nose-cone. a bit of plasticard to make wings and rivets and you're in business. i would suggest some sort of promethuim tank and guitar string as well.
a little work, but cheaper (cash-wise).
also take a look at Russ Wakelin's orks on the Ork Craft Carrier, there's some good conversions on there.
