Ok, I need some help / suggestions on a Necron army to defeat an Ork army (played by my son).

I've played him twice and lost badly.

Army List (1000 pts)

- Lord w/ Veil
- Immortal Squad (8) (flying circus tactic)

- Warrior Squad (11)
- Warrior Squad (10)

- Monolith

We're playing a 4 x 4 board, with 8 pieces of terrain, so lots of room.

His army is built around a looted basilisk, and a six man Nob squad, armed w/ power claws. He tucks the Basilisk in a corner, guarded by a shoota squad, out of LOS and uses indirect Ordnance barrage on me, forcing me to be the aggressor.

Both times, he disabled my 'lith, early on via Ordnance barrages, before I could get w/in 36" minimum range.
The looted basilisk seems overly effective at taking out my monolith and I'm wondering if we're interpreting the rules incorrectly. Are we using it correctly?:
Place pie plate over center of 'lith
Roll scatter die and if doesn't hit, roll one d6 for distance on scatter (still likely to overlap the 'lith)
Roll two d6 (because basilisk didn't move) and pick the larger.
Add the d6 to S9 Ordnance barrage results in glancing hit on a "5" or penetrating hit on a "6"

Then use the Ordnance results table (where 1-3 is bad, 4-6 is disastrous)

Any suggestions on the army list. It seems like I'm definitely using the tactics wrong.

Any thoughts to help out a newb?

Thanks

First - your son needs to get the new ork codex where looted bassies aren't an option. There's plenty in the new ork codex to make up for it though.

Secondly - drop the lith in 1000 points. Bulk up with more warriors. Warrior units of 19 are a real pain in the ass for me to kill with orks when the lord is nearby with an orb. I assualt, kill a few (doesn't matter if the pk nob does or not because the orb is nearby), 2/3 of what I killed gets back up, the lord veils them out of combat but within rapid fire range and I lose a substantial portion of the mob. Throw in 2 small units of destroyers and you should be able to counter what he throws out you.

Gah, I hate giving crons advice...

(btw, you are not playing the ordnance correctly - place template, roll for scatter (using 2d6 pick the highest since it's out of LOS), if hole is still over model, roll 2d6 (pick highest) for AP add to S, if glance or pen then roll on appropriate chart, if a pen roll on ord chart, not pen chart.)

EDIT: thanks to AnStWe for the catching my error.

To clarify the ordinance.

You are correct that the armor penetration roll is also 2d6 take the highest even though budro glossed over that part. On a glance you use the regular glance chart on a penetration you roll on the ordanace penetration chart.
