Something else I spotted today
http://www.thewarstore.com/ReaperLegendaryEncounters.html
Reaper prepaints are out, non collectable, non random, base troops for RPGs and wargames.
Not too bad looking, anyone bought them?

Not bad if you want one or two, but they are a little steep for the price. They need a boxed set, or two.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

I think they'll work well and are a decent enough price for the target audience, which is RPG gamemasters without the time to paint. The only thing that concerns me is the possiblity that the market is full of common D&D mini prepaints, but maybe those aren't generic enough.

I've seen 'em in the stores. They're...okay. They come in a standard blister (no foam). You can see exactly what you're getting. They're somewhere in quality between bendy-clickys and the AT-43/Conf. prepaints. If you're a D&D GM (or equivalent) and want to pick up some extra stuff and know EXACTLY what you're getting, they're fine, but I wouldn't expect wargamers to be especially interested, unless they're trying to really fill up some ranks.
Funniest bit: I go to pick up a blister (of skeletons, I believe), and it feels like I'm just picking up the cardboard backing. After years of being used to blisters having some heft, these are featherweight.

Come on lets be fair they are borderline crap, these look like D&D metal from 20 years ago.
I just cant see the point of prepainted models for wargames and for roleplaying games i cant see the point of minis at all, role playing should be about the story and the players interaction with each other and the NPC's ,If you have a floor plan and minis you should be war gaming /board gaming.I have played role-playing games for 20 years and never needed any form of minis let alone pre-painted ones.
If i were to use minis though ,then Andrea minatures are amazing .

Just wondering, k&b, what do you consider the "basic" RPG game? 1st edition D&D used chainmail minis for combat resolution, according to wiki. It was designed that way. The 3.5 system does too.

@Stonefox: the 'Chainmail' referred to would be Gary Gygax's original tabletop Wargame, not to be confused with the miniatures game of the same name from the early 2000s that got replaced with DDM.
Again, these are clearly NOT for wargamers (except the extremely cheap types). These are for RPGers and, with rare exception, aren't real concerned with figure quality from my experience.

Personally, if I walked in on a game being played with painted mini's for any board based RPG at a store, I'd be amazed. This fills that gap with a cheap fast solution.
I'm all about prepaints. The sculpts definitely leave something to be desired, but they fill their purpose.

We have some weekly D&D games at the FLGS. They all seem to use battlemats and a lot of unpainted models. Back when I played D&D in the 80's and early 90's, minis were a great tool to use and fun to collect (which, in turn, is what drew me over to 40K back then). The hassle back then was to try and get all the minis painted for each session. Prepainted seems to save some time for those willing to part with the cash.
The minis are great, but they will pass muster if I were playing.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

My friends use a battlemat for RPGs. Usually 4/5 character minis are painted once we're two or three sessions into a campaign, but it depends on how much we're into the campaign to a point. The Oppositiion is usually whatever we can scrounge: I once ran a Weird War II adventure for the gang as filler and the German soldiers were represented by Starburst candies, thus providing a sugary reward for vanquishing them.
The group still refers to Starbursts as Dead Germans.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy. |
