Osprey Publishing does a set of Ancient and Medieval miniature rules.

There are more expansions as well. I haven't seen any of them but I like Osprey's stuff in general and thought it was interesting they finally did some wargaming rules.

Glanced through the core rules last night. It's a d6 system, with several models to a base.

What I liked: Elite troops can reroll 1s & 2s. Superior troops can reroll 1s. Poor troops must reroll 6s! Armies tend to start in tight, orderly battle lines. The object is to maintain your formation, while disrupting the enemy battle line.

What I didn't like: when I got back into the maneuvering section, frankly I got lost. I started drowning in detail. I was reminded of other wargames that tried to be a simulation, rather than a game; and how I stopped playing them after a couple of tries... .

This was a very cursory look-over, and I might change my mind after playing a game or two.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

The movement section is the biggest bit of the rules. Movement is not as bad as it looks if you take your time, don't try to read and understand everything at one go, and check the example diagrams.

I think they are very well written. Ancients is a pretty complex topic for wargames and it cannot be done in much depth without some complication.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
