This spanks. Are the drop troops necessary or are they just a nice way to fill out the points?

The drop troops are for when you are facing either lots of vehicles (more than you have units to shoot them with) or they have land raiders or russes and you want to knock them out without having to try the lascannons.

They also let you put down firepower into MC, which will light your tanks up if you let them get too close.

I like incorporating the Land Raiders. Very nice. I'll be stealing that idea to increase the armored vehicle count in my full sized Guard army. Thanks.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person, who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

So, maybe I'm not getting the point of the Grenadiers...they're foot-slogging, right?

They're the cheap troop choice needed to run a legal list without resorting to last chancers (that extra command slot is needed for the 2nd land raider).

They aren't great, but they can move and fire their grenade launchers. Not a huge threat, but at least they aren't completely wasted points, right?

I've actually been moving my list to something similar. Do you think this template is the best for IG in 5th Edition (i.e. Heavy Armor)?

A few questions, why the Flamers on the Inquisitional Retinue over more Plasma Guns, what hordes worry those tanks and aren't the three 'hounds enough? Also why not Plasma Guns on the Grenadiers?

Gotcha - I was just surprised as I'm just used to seeing rancorous hatred of Grenadiers.

Flamers in 5th edition will all resolve together.

So if you get out, and hit 8 gaunts with the first flamer...you should be able to hit 8 gaunts with the second.

3 flamers is possible, but usually it's harder to get that 3rd flamer in as good a position as the first two...and it might be overkill anyway.

You don't really need to pierce armor with PG if you fry 'em with flame. There are alot of armies that will cluster up on your tanks. Remember there's no moving after you charge into contact with the tank, and in 5th you can't place your pie templates over the enemy if they are going to hit your own vehicles. So, if you can't move the assaulted vehicle away, drop out a couple flamers. That'll clear most stuff off.

I do think this is a very strong template for IG in 5th.

Grenadiers aren't great by any means, but for minimizing points spent on troops when you want to concentrate on other things--that's what they're really good at.

They also fit certain themed army types very well.
