This is not really a list, so much as a collection of what I have available to make a good list. It has recently occurred to me that my current list is pretty much useless in actual combat.

Steel Legion :

44 Troopers
13 Grenade Launchers
11 Rocket Teams
7 Sergeant Models
7 With CCW and Laspistol
5 Plasma Gunners
4 Officers
1 With Power Sword and Plasma Pistol
3 With CCW and Bolt Pistol
4 Heavy Bolter Teams
4 Lascannon Teams
2 Flamers
1 Standard Bearer

Ogryns :

5 Ogryns with Ripper Guns
1 Nork Deddog

Storm Troopers :

16 Troopers with Hellguns
4 Sergeants
2 With CCW and Hellpistol
2 With Bolter, Auspex, and Plasma Pistol
2 Meltagunners
2 Flamers
2 Grenade Launchers
2 Plasma Gunners

Armor :

3 Leman Russes
1 With Demolisher, hull Heavy Bolter, Multiple Mount Sponsons
2 With Multi-purpose Cannons (Demolisher/Main Battle Cannon/Vanquisher Cannon), hull Heavy Bolters, and Heavy Bolter Sponsons
2 Earthshaker Cannons
1 Chimera Mounted
1 Fixed Platform (typically accepted in battles)
1 Hell Hound
1 Sentinal
1 With Lascannon, Extra Armor, and Armored Crew Compartment

Now my normal rig for these bad troops and armor was as can be expected. I typically didn't take any of the Earthshakers, as they usually don't do enough damage in the course of a battle to justify themselves when compared to the Russes. The infantry was laid out so that each viable squad had an RPG and GL, including the command squads. The rest of the heavy weapons were formed into support teams. The remaining misc. units, assault, and heavy weapons teams are recent additions I have acquired.

I am looking for good general combat set up suggestions for a list that would apply to my current resources. I have seen many people post "hypothetical" lists before and recieved suggestions to acquire untis not itemized in the original list. Points value is flexible, as my current list with the troopers bearing Camileoline, Sharpshooters, and Iron Discipline is in excess of 2600 points, which I adjust to a variety of needs. Note, with the Armor I am willing to modify the models to bear other upgrades. Thank you for your time and expertise.

Most lists I post are 'real' lists I've either owned or borrowed, and always have played several games with.
If you look through my posts, you'll see alot of IG lists.

You have the models to make them all, pretty much.

Here's a couple:

While not a perfect match for what you do have, I'm hopeful it will give you some ideas.

If you want a list that matches your models, grab Army Builder and get to making one.

The problem isn't making a list. I have several. It is making a competent list. I left playing old Third Edition rules, now it is well practiced Fourth Edition when I returned. In Third you could make a shooty army and still be reasonably effective and tanks seemed a bit harder to kill. Now, assaults completely and utterly rule the field and tanks seem to fall like so many cheetos at a Games Day (hmmmm, delicious cheetos..... I mean... DAMN YOU CHEETOS!!!).

Assaults do not rule the field.

40K has been fundamentally altered so they do not.

It is very easy to win with shooty armies.

Most of my armies are built to drop 2 heavy tanks and 20 marines a turn.

Makes for boring games really, but people want to keep playing marines so I'll keep putting them away.

At least marines come with custom built coffins for easy return to sender, right? Emperor, this one's for you!

Stelek - out of curiosity, in your stormtrooper army, you run 2 squads of Stormtroopers and 2 squads of Inq. Stormtroopers...is there something about the Inq. Stormtroopers that lets you use 2 squads for one Elite slot?

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

Inquisitional Storm Troopers take up Troops slots. You get Imperial Guard Stormtroopers into the Troops slot as well if you take the Grenadiers doctrine.

This must be something that nobody I've met and played has seen. Assualts seem easier to get into and affect more damage. Since most non-imperial Armies besides the Tau are very much assault based, and most Space Marine armies are geared towards being complimentary to their assault capabilities, leaving only the poor Guard without reasonably effective assault troops (per model, I mean) for the Imperials. I think only the Tau Firewarriors are close to the Guardsmen in lacking assault capabilities. But then the Tau have the Kroot to offset that a bit.

Hence my problem. The Guard's best defense against assaults is counter-assault troops, ones that would simply cut the enemy off before they cause too much damage. The two options for the Guard seem to be an Armored Fist unit or to "buy back" the Rough Riders. However I have neither, so I must find alternatives.

Funny, I just upgraded my Tau to be more assault capable. lol

The guards best defense against being assaulted is SHOOTING THE ASSAULT TROOPS DEAD DEAD DEAD.

If you think otherwise, stop, slap your forehead, and re-read the above sentence.

Do not waste time or energy making assault troops for Guard. Spend your time and energy squeezing more weapons that wound marines on 2+ into your list. The more that pierce their armor is also good.

I've ripped every marine army to bits with my anti-marine army. It's silly how easy it is to shoot them dead.

I've posted many IG lists that just own marines. Take a looksee.

I knew that Stormtroopers could be taken as troops with the Grenadiers doctrine, but I'd forgotten that Inq. Storm Troopers take up Troops slots because that's what they are in Inquisitor armies...thanks for the clarification, kadun!

Just remember, both Inq storm troopers and Grenadiers are NOT Storm troopers--they can neither deep strike nor infiltrate.

They are identical in most other respects, barring wargear for their unit leaders (like inq storm trooper sarges can take thunder hammers...hahahhaa sorry old thread).

Right - and that's what I was remembering, but considering you've got them loaded in Chimeras, that's not really an issue.

Out of curiosity, why did you load the Inq Stormtroopers in Chimeras instead of Rhinos?

Chimeras > Rhinos.

Remember, the Inquisition pays 50 points for their Rhino still cause GW is too sucky to update their rules properly.
