I've decided to start converting a small warband of vanilla marines into a renegade gropu using chaos warriors and other bits. They look pretty nasty. Here is their story

The Emperor's Ghosts were once a proud, honored Chapter whose list of fearless deeds ran long. Yet one fateful day, these tall warriors committed their enitre Chapter over to the defense of the hive world Extarius. For Extarius was under heavy seige from a large company of Chaos Space Marines devoted to Tzeentch, named The Spite. The Emperor's Ghosts crushed the seige quickly and sent The Spite scurring back inot the warp. The Ghosts' commander, Xavius, decided that they would pursue them and destroy the war band utterly. The Ghosts disappeared into the Warp, not seen for two hundred years.
But then, one day, the Ghosts returned to Extarius, yet, they were changed forever. The last remaining Ghosts numbered only one hundred and seventy seven, but that was not all that was different. Their brilliant white armor had turned darkest black and was now unadorned with any seals, insignia, or markings. But that was not all that had changed. The Ghosts had seemingly become real ghosts. They faded in and out space, sinking back into the warp itself, whenever this happened, they took on a grayish pallor, their armor becoming ethereal.
Of course, this terrified the ruling council on Extarius and they immediatley called for an Inquisitor to investigate. Coming up with no explanation of than the taint of Chaos, the Inquisitor soon had the entire company of Marines excommunicated.
After they narrowly escaped Extarius, the Ghosts sought shelte among the stars. They resolved among themselves to continue to fight Chaos wherever it might be found, even if the Imperium wanted them dead. They re-named themselves the Phantom Legion and again disappeared.
Now, from time to time, there are reports of a band of spirit like Marines materialising amid ragin battles and turning the tide for humanity. These reports have never been confirmed, but each site is visited by the same Inquisitor who cast out the Ghosts from the Imperium. He has his own theories of who these "avenging spirits" truly are.
