As there's some leeway and a lot of variety here, I'm curious what base Dakka prefers to see bike-mounted characters on? The square base is IMO pretty silly looking with all the other round bases, but it's classic and comes with the bikes. A 'lozenge' made from a 25mm round cut in half and mated with a cav base I've seen done, and pretty exactly fits the footprint of the bike. 40mm round base isn't impossible, think the wheels of the bike just fit on it and there's always wheelies to dramatically pop off the base - I know a certain warboss around my parts is ramping off just such a base. Then there's the 60mm rounder, great for attak bikes but too much for a single standard biker?

Let me know Dakka, my biker of the apocalypse needs something to ride on

While I haven't built any bikes recently since I started seeing the lozenge bases, I think they're the nicest way to showcase biker models. The regular cav bases just don't do a bike justice.

I don't like the caverlary bases, because IMO they are to small. you don't really see the base underneath a SM bike or the old ork bikes. so I decideto use a swarm base witha 40mm round base cut in half at the ends. for my warboss I needed one which was even bigger

Thanks Anung, and I actually just found this tutorial on GeeDub's site - http://uk.games-workshop.com/spacemarines/basing-bikes/1/

Looks like big lozenge is clearly better, and currently rocking the poll thus far. I'm looking for examples of bikes on 40mm bases, but need to decide if I really want the dude ramping off and grabbing air like he'd need to to fit. I'm thinking more slewing through a turn, demonic fist hanging to one side as he eyes the other way. Dunno if that'd be better with a full on 60mm or the big lozenge.

I use a cav base with a 25 mm round base cut in half on either end. Still big enough for my Ravenwing but not so big that it hurts competitiveness.

Don't have any pics but I'll see if I can get some later...

Yeah, I'd say depending on the bulk of the model, don't rule out a cav+25mm round style lozenge. Those larger 40mm customs look great, but seem just a bit too chunky for actual (read: competitive) gameplay. If your bikes are a bit slimmer than say, the old ork bike with it's 17 foot wide gun rack, I'd stick with the slimmer bases.

That, and of course, we'd all like to see the bugger when you base him!

I used to have a custom built ork bike squad on 60mm bases. It gets in the way. The "lozenge" style looks very nice though.

I got custom sized pill/lozenge bases from litko for my squat bikes. They will do any width/length

I think mine are 50*30 and 70*40 for bikes and attack trikes.

So much lozenge love!

As I contemplate taking the time to build a pill base, here's the biker posed on a 60mm base. Kinda like it, lets me put something on the base (drum of stuff ftw!) and also lean the bike while containing his demonic gauntlet. Testing on a 40mm square shows a lean looks kinda dumb there, and the fist spike overhangs the base edge a bit ...

His head will be the 3x lense 'nurgle' one, once Neal sends it to me. And the drum isn't glued down or final yet.

Space Marine bikes are my favorite unit; I have 17 of them in my Ultramarines force. I started the army using the standard cavalry bases provided, and haven't had the desire to convert or switch them to anything else.

The 60mm round looks pretty good for the lord as a showcase, but IMO for bikes in general, none of the above hold a candle to the pre-made ovals GF9 makes:

maybe it's just my screen resolution at work, but all I see here is a big fat square. not very appealing at all.

It must just be your screen rez, because it's a big black square with 8 black lozenges on it.

I like the idea of him leaning into a turn hard, his claw outstretched and sending up sparks off the pavement as he gets ready to snap it up and take off someone's torso. To that end, I might cut at the shoulder a bit to make the angle a bit more like he is reaching out, with the bike at a more extreme angle.
Makes me want to watch Akira again, and buy an army of bikes...

At anyrate, I think a slightly wider losenge would look good for this, with the wheels at one far edge, and his claw just touching the other. Maybe get some plasticard and make a custome sized base if it doesn't quite fit.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

the 60mm round base looks good.

lozenge bases look good.

cavalry bases look horrible.

problem with 40mm diameter or wide bases for bikes is that when you have more than one, you are cramping your gameplay options/ they're plain and simply just too big. Better to stick with smaller bases, but the 60mm looks good for the lord.

Given that he's rockin' a demonic gauntlet that would be 6-10 torsos ... or his left nut if I roll a 1

Glad the big base is being well received. I agree with Taco on the usability concerns of ginormous bases, and I think if I were doing a whole unit of bikers I would need to whip up some lozenges, and if I were doing a whole army of them I would likely go with the GF9 bases.

The head should be in the mail from Neal today, so I'll play around with posing and see what's what. The dude should be seeing paint next week, which is a shockingly short build-to-paint time for me

On a 1 he over extends and falls off his bike. Sure, his armor protects his body, but his pride is greviously wounded while his friends laugh at him.

It really does make me want to strip and rebuild the Chappy on a bike I have, though I don't know how to make him as cool as yours :(

Nice model, though the barrel is a little too attention-hogging. Maybe if there was some other rubble near it? The way it is now, I almost feel like your army list would read

Kinda like his familiar or pet or something :S

And on my work monitor the pics actually look half decent, the model is just that dark. Matte black, dark brown, metal, highlights and contrasty bits for spice. Thanks for the kind words you 2, unsure what to really do to topple the barrel's dominance ... My demosaurus prince has the same problem then, with 1 big leaky barrel on her base.

I used a 60mm round for my bike lord too, but then I had him with one foot up on the footboard, standing beside the bike and menacing a falling marine on the ground, so I guess technically I did a sort of diorama with it, but it's still small enough to play with, as long as the rest of the bikers keep to the losenge bases.

The problem with the bigger bases is that it makes you a bigger target. Hence my frustration with the IG weapons deal (a touchy tread somewhere else in here). Although it does look cool.
