6000pt Apocalypse Battle
Basement War
Imperial Guard vs. Space Marines
This battle is the first Apocalypse Game I have ever organized, but now that I have the tables and terrain in my basement, I hope to host larger (slightly) battles involving a few more players. If you have painted armies, and are interested in participating in a basement Apocalypse battle/summer campaign let me know. My e-mail is Samwise158@yahoo.com.
In the meantime here is the brief battle report. I experimented with a T-shaped table, it fits nicely into the basement space and is divided into a wooded and city area.
Here are the armies that were taking part. The Grey Griffons Space Marines
My Imperial Guard Army
This picture shows the deployment corridor and how it spanned the board. It roughly split the T into two pieces across a large open expanse in the middle.
I won the bid to set up, bidding 9 minutes and undercutting my opponent's ten. I hastily tossed my 3 infantry platoons into the 3 buildings which spanned the open expanse of no-man's land. The banebalade and most of my armor deployed in between the buildings with my artillery in the rear.
I managed to deploy most of my army, but purposefully left my Hellhounds, Rough Riders and deep striking Storm Troopers in reserve.
For my strategic assets I chose Ambush and Disruption Beacon, in an effort to protect myself from flank attacks and deep strikers. The small tent behind the Demolisher represented the beacon.
The Grey Griffons
st up across a wide frontage with several units in rhinos positioned alongside units on foot. The line was supported with Devastators with missile launchers and Lascannons, and several dreadnoughts. In the extreme backfield was a Damocles command rhino that would be guiding the orbital bombardments and scheduled bombardments that were keyed into my positions.
On his wooded flank, he massed his armor as well as some scouts, dreadnoughts and his main attack elements.
He kept a pair of terminator squads as well as an assault squad, led by the company master and a chaplain in reserve.
Turn 1
I began by pulling my tanks back slightly and making a few minor redeployments within my buildings.
I launched a disappointing artillery bombardment, and then opened fire with my heavy weapons and battle tanks. My fire inflicted heavy casualties on a few infantry squads in the middle and despite losing only light casualties, broke an assault squad led by a librarian who proceeded to flee off the board in a bout of unlucky rolling.
A Lascannon shot from one of my Leman Russ also managed to penetrate the Land Raider, forcing the terminators inside to disembark and suffer a few casualties to massed firepower.
In response the Marine army surged forward both on foot and in many vehicles popping smoke and driving towards the imperial positions. The Terminators hopped back into the Land Raider, which surged forward using the power of the machine spirit.
The accurate Lascannons from the devastators stunned the Baneblade's driver and supporting fire from the Predator and Dreadnoughts stunned and immobilized one of the Leman Russ.
Accurate bolter and plasma fire also accounted for both sentinels which collapsed or exploded.
The Techmarine also turbo boosted forward, potentially as a homer for the Terminators to teleport around.
The final move of the turn was the arrival of the orbital bombardment upon the Leman Russ tanks. The blasts were largely ineffective, but managed to shake another tank. an cripple the gun on the immobilized Russ.
The unshaken Imperial Guard tanks pulled back further as the chimeras moved forward to contribute their fire to the firing line and the Hellhounds and Hardened Vets moved up to try and take the objectives near the Marine held buildings on the left flank. All the other units that could see something let loose with all of their firepower. The first casualty was the Techmarine who was hit by a krak missile and obliterated.
Fire from the special weapons team destroyed the smoked rhino driving up the city flank. Once the Hellhounds and mortars had hit the entangled marines there were only two left.
In the center lascannon fire took out a dreadnought and autocannon shots tore open another Rhino. The survivors from that rhino then came under fire from the Baneblade, mortars, suffering several more casualties.
The standoff between the Baneblade and Land Raider continued as fire shook the Land Raider, but failed to do any damage. Meanwhile the supporting infantry and tanks concentrated their firepower on the scouts and marines on foot, wiping out the scouts and killing a few more infantry.
The Space Marines began their second turn, looking thin on the ground, with only one squad that could actually engage the Imperials up close. He tried to deep strike both Terminator squads into the midst of the Guard artillery, but I managed to send one squad to the other side of the board with my disruption beacon and the other had a 12 inch scatter that landed it on an artillery piece, killing the whole squad.
With the death of his Terminators and his awareness of the impending arrival of my Rough Riders and Deep striking Storm Troopers he conceded the game. Perhaps a bit prematurely, but his infantry and tanks were in no position to grab my objectives and I had a good chance of taking one or two of the ones in his area, or in no man's land. So after a lot of planning, the battle ended up only taking a few hours. So we played Blood Bowl the rest of the afternoon.
