Subject: Question on Dipping?
|
 |

I am about to start dipping my Ork army, and have read through many How-To's on doing it. My question is will dipping work or look right when used on black parts? To maybe make my question make more sense, I am thinking of having black armor on my boyz. Will it turn out well, or do I need to pick a different color?

Dipping works on midtone and lighter colors. Dipping ads the 'shadow' color, not a highlight. If you went with dark grey armor and a black stain, it might work, but I doubt it. I think it works best on earth tones.

If you are dipping into a black color, you can dry brush/highlight your black bitz to a lighter grey. Then when the dip/wash goes over, it will stain those a darker grey, with a black base, which will look ok.
You might even just be able to use a grey base with a dark dip to get it towards black, but you will have to experiment in any case.

Thanks, I guess i will try and experiment. I did my primer in gray, so one of the tests i may do is seeing how that turns out without adding any more color to it. I am also going to go a little different route and see how a red skinned Ork looks. My last experiment will be keeping the skin the primer gray and dipping it. I will post some pictures when i am have them finished. Thanks for the help.

if you plan on using red, a white primer will give you the best results with fewer coats.

generally, dipping works on brighter colors. On dark colors, you don't see any difference. Reds, yellow, gold, blue, and green all work well dipped.

I just wanted to say thank you for the help. I finally tested out Dipping this weekend with awesome results. I primed them gray, and then used Vallejo paints to add color where i wanted it. I say it like that because i kept the skin Primer Gray. I added Camo Green for the shirt, Cobra Leather for the pants, Black for the boots, Gory Red for the belt and cloth items, and Gun metal for the weapons/helmets. Oh, I did the eyes in yellow and teeth in white as well. I then attached a long golf tee to the base, dipped, then spun it in a small box to get off the excess. I was happy with the results!!
I will post a picture tonight, since i didn't want to move the model much until it dried.
