I have a buddy that used to buy a primer from Wal-Mart. Comes in a small can and it's a grey coat. Can't remember the name though. It was cheap and I really don't think it did very well. He didn't mind it, but when he finally started shelling out some cash for a SoB army he upgraded his primer.

I use it exclusively but rember 3 light coats work better then one thick one, also invest in some black ink becouse ocasionaly you may have to use it, if you follow this advice you should not have a problem and for 89 cents vrs. $8.00 it's well worth the extra 10 mins of time. I use the Krylon gray primer from Walmart. I'd had pretty good results with it up until recently, but then, I think the last model I tried to prime I was using a mostly empty spray can.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

You can get Krylon there, you can probably get Painter's Touch there too. Painter's touch is great for plastic, Krylon is probably better for metal. If you get Painter's Touch (or even the Krylon) make sure what you are buying actually says "primer" on it.

Bah! Just buy your base coat and cut out the middle man.

Myself I usually buy the Krylon Fusion on all of my minis since it bonds at the molecular level with plastics and it works good on the pewter ones too. Actually with the pewter ones I notice that there is significantly less paint comming off just by looking at the mini like what happens with other primers that I've used, plus it sprays a nice even coat.

I use Krylon Flat black primer. I usually get it at Wal-Mart. One word of warning, though. I have found out the hard way that, if you buy a can of primer from a store (other than a gaming/hobby store) and it comes out poorly, do not buy another can from that store for awhile. The whole batch is from the same shipment and will likely all be the same garbage quality. More often than not.

I've had cans that come out watery with little to no black pigment despite shaking the can for 20+ minutes. One trip to Wal-Mart for a return and another can later, same problem.

I like that crappy store brand from Wal-Mart... I think its a blue can for .88 cents. It wouldn't cover a chair its so thin... but as for models it doesnt lose details...cause its so thin. TaDa...
