Hi, I've been looking for it to show to a friend. Where is the rule about minimum base size actually written in the rulebook?

And how does it apply to IG Heavy Weapons?

Oddly enough it's on page 6 of the Warhammer 40,000 4th edition rulebook under the heading 'Base And Height Guidelines'.

Ah, one of the great 40k debates. Bases. Especially amongst the IG models. GW has been pretty inconsistant with base sizes. They say "the base it comes with" but they have many different bases coming with the same basic model/option. For instance, the old Cadian missile launchers come with one long square base and one round base, then the Steel Legion missile launcher team comes with two round bases while the new Cadian and Catachan missile launchers come with the massive round base. Then the old heavy weapons (still available from GW, but the old style) such as mortars, heavy bolters, autocannons, and lasscannons do not come with a base at all!

Pretty much, at my local hobby shop, we say "what ever fits." You wouldn't try to put and Ogryn on a 25mm, but you can put them on the massive bases if you want. With other armies, such as Space Marine Terminators, they allow the little bases or the medium ones, most people opt for the little bases as they fit in boxes better and move on the board better. But, GW wants them on the medium bases.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

Where is the toher thread? Can you link?

And I hit the rulebook before work this morning Ghaz and didn't see it, but then again, that is kind of an obscure heading. =)

But be warned; it's getting ugly in there.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

where we play the guy with the h weapon has a calvery base if he is useing a tri pod weapon and a small base if he has a rock and the loader was on a small one -- also in citys of death i think it says you can put them on smaller bases for ease of movement throw terrain

He ain't kiddin!!! I've always been fine with whatever base someone wanted to use as long as it "fits". Putting a snotling on a 50mm base is kinda ridiculous. I actually just finished basing my Inquisitor in Power Armor on a 40mm base because I wanted to give him some height and model his base a bit. It'll just suck in HtH when he has to face 6 Genestealers in base to base contact instead of, like, three...

the gw FAQ states and i quote: heavy weapon teams are supplied with a large base to contain both crewmen and the weapon. treat them as two separate models that are based togather for convenience of movement (end quote) with that said not being an ig player i can see modeling them on 2 bases would be more helpful like transporting, moving into or out of terrain, fireing them out of a chimera, and so on and so on --another thing is that they did not always come on the 60mm base--the best thing i can say is that you take a poll at you local shop that you play in and they allow to model on diferant bases then do so-- also you can always model them on seperate bases then lay the sepeate bases on the 60mm base and gs around them or make a 60mm base they both can fit on so you remove and replace them if someone has a problum about them on 2 bases

As the rules state, you may mount a model on a larger base if you want.

The square base supplied in the heavy weapons team box is for one model and it is considerably larger (area) than the round "standard" version.

Both should be considered standardmeening the square is the minimum sized square base you may use and the round is the minimum sized round.

On a side note, there was a thread about base sized a while back in wich a player claimed his models could not be charged based on the cant move within 1" rules and the fact that the base he was using aparently was 25mm (~0.98").

To deal with such individuals I would sugest simply pointing out that all GW models are supplied with 1" bases nomatter what the box states and if he has based his models on ~0.98" bases then all his models are breaking the minimum base size rule and that all such models must be removed from play.

Its always fun to rulelawyer a ruleslawyer.

In short GW rulings are void!

The what?

And this is stated where?

GW's small round bases have always been sold as 25mm bases, not 1". I don't recall seeing base sizes ever mentioned on boxes.

and if he has based his models on ~0.98" bases

... then he's following the rules, so long as those bases are the bases that came with the models.
