I just joined a begginers and In my first 1000 point game my opponent had a space marine army with a librairian. the librarian and his counterparts got right up in my line of guardians and dire avengers and after a rather pathetic round of shooting by me ( I threw Everything I had at his squad) and A horrible round of assault by my banshees his squad ripped apart my lines and he won the game. any advice on how to deal with this in future games?

Any time you use Banshees you must have a Farseer to go with them to use doom. They look good on paper but without Doom they really become ineffective. 1 Wraithlord often works well in 1000pt games also. You should really post your list up and you will get the response you need along with tactics.

If you want an anti-character Farseer taking mind war can be useful. However, this will really only work against stuff like Ork Warbosses and IG Colonels. Against the warboss it can be worthwhile, the IG Colonel serves to keep his guys in line, but the problem is you have to get close. Also, you cannot rely on it killing off a Librarian. His Ld is too high. Trying to snipe meltagun and plas users can also be worthwhile, however, taking Doom, Fortune, Spirit Stones and Runes of Witnessing will make sure the Librarian will have a very hard time getting off any powers, and your eldar road cones will reroll the important things. Yarr..!

I would second that. Banshees versus Harlequins point for point as has been argued in other threads are inferior but require a Falcon most times if you go that route.

The Avatar moves 6" a turn. How are you going to get it into combat with him? As a deterrent, okay, but to hunt ICs, no. Go with Harlies or add Doom, and be sure to use RoWarding.

Having a Farseer on jetbike nuke lo-Ld enemies with Mind War can also be an excellent idea IMHO

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

what was the squad? A librarian and 10 man assault squad in 1000 points? That's tough for us. Don't be afraid to step up within 18" and use small arms if it means you can take out some models. Alternatively do the opposite keeping away but it is probably not possible on a 4'x4' of they have jump packs.

KILL! MAIM! BURN! KILL! MAIM! BURN! I... I mean... For the Emperor?..

Thought for the day - Take scatter lasers on 10-man Guardian squads and open fire with savage abandon. Even a 10-man squad with a Libby won't last more than 2 turns in a firestorm from 6 scatters, and of course you could mount some on a wave serpent, which is about the time it takes them to close with you on a 4x4

after a few hours sleep I have to concur: Harlies + Doom. Don't be afraid to take the troupe leader alongside the shadowseer, those S4 Power weapon attacks are killer. Ditto RoW.

The problem is that low leadership enemies mostly don't exist. The librarian and any other character that's going to be getting close to him is going to have leadership 10...end of story.

Now there are a couple ways to deal with things like this. First off, if it happens to be a librarian you want to take care of, runes of warding are going to really help you out. Not only will they blunt his psy powers, but they give a good chance that he'll hurt himself any time he attempts to cast. Second, regardless of who you are trying to kill, doom works wonders when you are going to alpha strike a unit. Everything that attacks it will get to reroll failed to wound rolls for the whole turn (yours and your opponent's). This tends to be a little less effective on librarians since they have psy hoods to attempt to nullify your powers but it's still worth having. One very important note about doom: it is cast at the start of your turn and has a 24" range, no line of sight required. This means you can hide your farseer somewhere near the enemy (aka 24-20 inches away) and try to doom them. If it works, then in the movement phase, you can move your troops into position to shoot and/or assault the unit. If your doom does not work (you fail the cast or the psy hood nullifys it) then you can move your troops into position to hide and try again next turn.

I'm not sure if you have the long range fire power to pull it off, but the way I normally take care of characters moveing up to my lines is to shoot them from range. I pelt them with long range fire from my dark reapers, war walkers, and falcons (falcons being the only unit I see you really using for this purpose, although your guardians could also help out) to whittle down the squad the character is with. Once the squad is just a couple of guys and the leader, I zoom up with fire dragons (of which you have 2 squads). Since the dragons are packing strength 8 weapons, there is a good chance that the character will take a wound and get insta-killed by the high strength shooting. If you are still fielding the fire dragon exarch with the flamer that I advised you to get rid of, make sure his squad shoots first since this is one of the few situations where the flamer is actually useful.

Alright Ill keep those tactics in mind when playing him again and I think Ill pick up a few war walkers the massive volume of fire they put out especialy with scatter lasers.

With war walkers, you really need to field 3 or leave them at home. In smaller numbers they have difficulty producing the fire power needed to justify both their frailty and their occupation of a heavy support slot. As far as weapons go, you can't go wrong with double scatter lasers. I run mine either that way or with scatter laser and star cannon. Never put bright lances on walkers, it's a waste. Also never put shuriken cannons on walkers. The lack of range means you have to get close to your enemy to fire and that gets your walkers killed all the time. A farseer with guide ensures that they will wipe out a squad every turn they shoot.

If you can manage it, I would suggest magnetizing the weapons so that you can swap them in and out as you see fit. Not only does it allow you to experiment, it also gives you flexibility to change for different events and as your army matures. If you need help with the magnets, look in the modeling section, there are some articles / threads there on how to do it and where to get the magnets. Heck, I would recommend setting up all your heavy weapons that way for maximum army flexibility. It's a whole lot easier to do before you have everything all painted up and assembled than it is to go back and do it later.

I actualy do magnetize my weapon mounts its really good for testing out what combinations work best and for fighting multiple diffrent armies in a row. as for the war walkers they will work execlently along with my farseer wich I gave doom and guide Ill have them hang back with my wraitlord and gurdian squad and just hammer away at the enemy.

I dont think space marine librians will be hassling me with my line putting out enough fire power to vaporize a daemon.

IG Colonels are sweet, succulent targets... However, a Warboss that is inside a unit is a terrible target, as his Leadership is affected by Mob Rule. That is, his Leadership is equal to the amount of Boyz in his Mob. Not good, with a 20/30-man mob.

No stat can be over 10, so he ends up being leadership 10 just like virtualy ever other character in the game (at least all the ones that are going to be moving towards your lines).
