my friend has an IG army that is fairly large and consists mostly of infantry, he started to get bored so he made up a new name for his troopers; "capital marines". theyre supposed to be IG comandos that are used on imperial ships to board enemy vessils and take them from the inside out. so far he has a heavy bolter team with the HB completly striped down and made more light weight as well as troopers using "breaching charges"(sachel charges"). i was wondering if you guys have any ideas on what special equipment/doctrins they should have.

An Imperial Navy boarding party, eh? Sounds nifty. Don't call them Marines though. I'd say that Drop Troops (representing teleporters) is a no brainer given the fluff. Veterans with shotguns would be very fluff-consistent (however keep in mind that shotguns suck against anyone but other guardsmen). Warrior Weapons, while not a popular doctrine from a mathhammer standpoint, would be fluffy. You can't take that with Drop Troops though. Special Weapons Squads with demo charges would make sense. Iron Discipline is always a good choice no matter what the fluff.

I nominate 'naval infantry' or boarding parties.
Carapace armor is the most logical choice. he could use Bret men at arms with Pig Iron gas mask helmets.

DocOpt, while I agree with you that shotguns suck, Id say that they are a step up from their alternative, unless it changed from the last time I played guard(and it may have) shotguns are s3 assault 2 compaired to the wonderful s3 rapidfire flashlight, so at-least you could soften up the enemy before you charged into their ranks, and I actually used to have successful charges, but thats another story.
That being said, Special weapons squads with demo charges are the most fun unit Ive ever used. Comeon, you can throw a large template up to 6" in any direction, and its a s8 ordinance blast. The only downside is you can wipe out your own squad, but thats part of the fun, isnt it?
Ive always been a fan of chem inhalers but they are a bit costly if your potentially vaporizing the squad.

A while back I was working on a Naval Infantry army, which was eventually scrapped due to the release of the plastic Canadians.
Anyways, I know these aren't exactly "boarding" units, but I had a converted Chimera that was a targeting vehicle for an orbital strike (counts as Basilisk with ACC). I was also inspired by some book I had read that had an Imperial Navy fire control officer working with guardsmen on the ground. I decided to use an Inquisitor paired with an Orbital Strike to represent a high-ranking naval officer in charge of directing barrages.
As for infantry, you can't go wrong with Drop Troops. Also, you should consider Sentinels with Heavy Flamers.

Today I didn't even have to use my hot-shot las; I gotta say it was a good day. |

the only reson he called them "marines" is b/c in essence thats what they truly are; boarding units that attack anemy ships. he also wants to use them for city fight games, he already converted some gardsmen into vets, the have shotguns and demo charges. thanks for the ideas, i appretiate it alot.

They can be space marines, they just can't be Space Marines.
But "capital marines" doesn't really make sense. I assume
"capital" is referring to capital ships. I agree that calling them naval infantry or naval marines is more appropriate.
It would be somewhat humorous if you just told people he had a space marine army, and when they get confused at the beginning of the game, you just say, "No, no....these are just space marines. Not Space Marines."
As for doctrines though, I would say satchel charges definitely makes sense, and possibly carapace armor too, if these guys are supposed to be pretty well-equipped.
