I was ordering a bunch of orks from the war store, and i couldn't get stormboy parts from them. So, rather than pay fifteen dollars for five rockets I'm going to try to find something cheaper to convert them with. I've got a couple ideas.

option 1: space marine conversion bits. 1 Shoulderpad near the top of the backpack for the rocket booster.

option 2: tau drone backpacks. Not sure how the size of these really compares, but it would actually be cheaper to buy tau drones than stormboy rockets! Also I have a friend buying tau soon and I thought it'd be a good opportunity to paint them matching colors. (and scuff em up, of course) I could pull off the guns and strap the disks on the back of the orks.

...or maybe I could put the orks on top of the drones, like hoverboards. Would the hover base support that?

both of these options are cheaper than buying stormboy conversions... But do you guys have any better ideas? I'm most likely going to go for 10-12 stormboyz for now.

It probably wouldn't be too hard to use the drones strapped to their backs as a base for a helcoptor-blade type setup. Attach the drone to the Ork's back by the weapon mounting, and run some plasticard blades out from under the drone's disc.

Having said that, just strapping drones to their backs does sound nice and Orky. Mix it up with a couple 'skyboarding', and maybe one just hanging on for grim death by his fingertips...

I like the idea! If you do go with it, I'd see the nob getting two drones (gotta be betta den da uvver, weedier boys!) one handily nailed to each boot!

How about one with a drone attached to each arm, like wings?

I don't think it's cheaper, but Tzeench discs might be cool...

well I have seen people but the marines jet packs on em. You could even try making your own out of tubes and cones.

never though of drone backpacks before - so long as they're orkified a bit to show the mekboy 'improvements' and repairs, it sounds very fluffy.

I'm using marine jumppacks cut in half, with extra doodads added to look orky as possible. I've previously used complete marine jumppacks, which is easier but dearer and not as cool looking

I think I'll definitely be stealing a few of these ideas to bulk out my Stormboyz mob.

Also, if you get the chance, I'd recommend making the squad 20 strong just to keep them fearless for as long as possible!

Would little bits of duct tape be bad for the models? I was thinking of cutting it into tiny strips (scaled roughly to the orks) and then wrapping it around the ork/drone midsection after everything was painted and assembled. It looks really cool in my head, but i'm not sure if it would have trouble sticking, or rip the paint off or what.

I don't even KNOW anymore.

Duct tape disintegrates over time. You'd be better off using small strips of gauze (or even green stuff) painted silver to represent the tape.

If you use assault marine packs, you could put a bunch of scratches, etc on them, then add some space marine shoulder pads and other parts like they were "looted amour" or something. After that, paint them in the colors of your buddy's Space Marine army as if they took them from his dead models. The look on his face should be priceless.

I just ordered those bits packs from GW, but if you dont want that you might try this. Plastic tubing for the rocket pack body and fins, and green stuff shaped for the cones. A bit of electronic wire and various other platuc card bits and tubes for every thing else and bamO. Storm boyz.

And also this way you can use all the parts from your plastic boyz kits. And not have to hunt e-bay and buy slugga arms from Insaniak I am awaiting them in the mail any day now thanks.

Why would I have to hunt for extra slugga arms? I was under the impression that a boyz sprue came with enough weapons to make everyone a slugga or a shoota.

Also, I've decided to sculpt my rocket packs with various parts from my friendly local mom and pop robot store. I bought a bunch of parts I still have to assemble, but I'll post pictures when one's done. It ended up running me like 6 bucks for enough parts to convert 15 boyz to stormboyz. They're all gonna have two "barrels", with a big red button on the back to activate them. Though, I'm still tempted to buy a squad of four tau drones and put them on the hands and feet of my Nob. It would be so badass imagining him swooping around like the Green Goblin.

I laughed when I read the big red button on the back bit.

I also had the idea to use the drones as hover boards, but never thought of them for orks (I was thinking of them as a chaos hover board thing for my friend.) I wasn't thinking of the wing idea though.

Looks good to me!
