... from Reaper Miniatures:

Not In Catalog Doesn't Mean Out of Print!
Posted on 04-07-08

As some of you may or may not know, every April first Reaper does a product cut that we lovingly call NICed for Not in Catalog. Nope, this is not an April fool’s joke.

We thought you might want to see the list so... to download this year’s NICed listing, here's a link to an Excel spreadsheet of the NIC items.

As usual, 120 Dark Heaven Models are being trimmed from the "active" line. This does not mean they are OOP (Out of Production) it simply means they are no longer listed in out catalog or available through distribution. You can still purchase all of these models from our on-line store.

You will also see on this list all of Pro Paint and 18 Master Series Paint colors (6 triads).

Old Pro Paint numbers (08001-08312 and 18001-18312) are being discontinued in favor of new part numbers for the exciting Pro Paint NEW RELEASE scheduled for the end of this month! A few of the most popular Pro Paint colors will remain, with new part numbers, but all of the formulas are being improved.

Master Series Paints will be expanded back to 216 colors over the next several months with exciting new releases--the first being in June with the Lava Colors triad.

The Pro Paint and Master Series Paint cuts are OOP cuts and will only be available until we run out of inventory.

That spreadsheet also contains the listing for all of the products that we used to make that are truly out of production, like Doom and L5R miniatures and the limited edition boxed sets.

If you see anything you want that's being discontinued, get them while you can.

I would guess that the reason Reaper does this is because they staple their catalog instead of perfect binding. That puts a ceiling on how many pages they can make it, and they'd rather sell new minis then keep old ones.

Will anybody be sad at the passing of the pro-paints? I have a bunch, and outside of two of the greys being the bolter color of my Space Marines, I'm solidly ambivilant about the entire line. It's not like Ral Partha, where a few colors were great (Paladin Blue FTW) while others were awful (Freaking Robe Red). The entire Pro Series were simply.... there. I always liked the shaker skull though.

Additionally I know DP9 ran into an issue years ago where stores and distributors complained because the company ahd too many products for sale. Making older releases 'online only' makes a lot of sense... The company can even save a nickel or two by selling them in plain packaging instead of printed boxes, for example.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Read it again. Reaper Pro Paints are not going away. True, they're being reformulated and the colors have been revised but they're still basically the same paints as before. Apparently enough people use the Pro Paints because at one time shortly after the release of the Master Series their fate was in doubt.

I guess i'm just accustomed to a certain amount of double speak. To me, "Re formulated and color revised" sounds a lot like completely different.

Still though, I've never encountered an enthusiastic fan of the range. Cancelling seemed like a reasonably understandable move.
