I have a group that claims that if you have say, a unit of 5 marines, who loses 3 guys, gets joined by an IC of some sort, now counts as a scoring unit again. Where are the rules controlling this so I have a page to show them the rules on this?

It is my understanding that an IC is a non scoring model, whether it joins a unit or not....therefore it cannot an increase a non-retinue unit to scoring status, whereas an IC in a retinue counts for purposes of keeping that a scoring unit.

Scoring status of a unit is determined by the victory point chart on page 85 of the rulebook.

Page 86 of the rulebook in 'units with distinct elements' clearly states that ICs are always counted separately for Victory Points from the unit they are joined to.

In short, you are right. At the end of the game an IC is counted separate and is not a scoring unit.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

I saw that too, and the counter arguement is that while he counts separetly for VP's, he is still part of the unit and makes it a scoring unit for purposes of seizing objectives etc.

But the only way to determine whether something is a scoring unit or not is the VP chart.

So how else can you do it? The unit itself is what is scoring or not scoring and that status is determined by whether the UNIT is below 50% starting strength. . .the character is calculated separately.

Gotcha! Now it makes sense.
