I recently attended Adepticon 2008 and had a great time! Congrats to the organizers and participants for a great show.
Wanted to start a discussion on the topic of display bases and their part in the competition after some observations I have made this year and having attended for a while.
It seems a lot of teams really go overboard with their display boards and that really contributes to the wonderful spectacle of Adepticon! Some teams have such a fabulous presentation that they need extra floor space and bring props banners and costumes.
My concern is that while this is great to see, from a spectacle point of view, it seems to lend a great advantage to local teams or teams with a better ability to transport props etc. Clearly the grand spectacle is what the show is about though, so criticizing that eccentricity I do with caution as those displays are all great to see.
That said, why not have a painting category for team vignettes and isolate that out of the overall scores for the team tourney? Perhaps provide some rules for display base limitations and actually have this wonderful emerging art form become a whole new American category for painting awards?
This could simultaneously, level the playing field for theme and painting for out-of-towners who participate in the team tourney and still recognize the awesome work people do for these display bases which are dramatic works of art in their own right.
Seems like a win/win situation, what say you? Any participants out there want to offer their opinions?
