Get ready for some rambling, its 0240 here and I just did a caesarian, keeping me back from going home....
On April 25th 2000 I finally logged onto dakka for the first time after a year or so of lurking with a post about upcoming release of a
FW wave serpent (and duely proven right later in the year) and other assorted news and rumours from my tour of the studio by Jervis.
8 years to the day on (its the 25th here in Oz) and this is also my 10,000th post.
So 2 events for my time on dakka in one day....
A history of my time on dakka.
Living in Rockhampton a friend put me onto Dakka and it took over 6 months for me to work out how to log on...
When I first posted in 2008 I was a nurse living in London, England.
I continued on back in Australia in my home town of Rockhampton, 650km from Brisbane and the nearest
GT.
Then moved to Brisbane to do medicine, met my future wife, bought a unit.
Got married, graduated university to become a doctor.
Bought a house, a dog, wife pregnant (shhh don't tell anyone we only found out yesterday), and am working towards getting on the OBGYN training programme.
Which brings us to the now...
Over the years dakka grew from a simple board to the ezboard (often referred to as the golden age of dakka) the move to the 3rd ed boards which rattled and crashed regularly to the newer format and then the upgrades after it was purchased by our supreme and enlightened overlord... Yakface.
I think dakka has entered a new golden age since the takeover and upgrading by Yakface.
IMHO the articles will evenetually become as big as the forums, the potential for them is unlimited if we put in the effort. Dakka is still one of the 'Big 3'
40k websites, still the place to come for
YMDC. It still has the self moderation streak amongst the regulars and as always there are 2 or 3 posters who think they know everything and love to post to that effect, its just that the names have changed (Fond Memories of Drew Riggio and his bouncing ball riding skeleton avatar).
For a couple of years after 3rd ed came out I struggled to maintain a presence here, I wasn't playing
40k (still aren't) and I was distracted by trying to get through a medical degree, and I limited myself to behind the scenes modding. But the last year or so have seen a resurgence of posting by me, helped by the growing number of
WHFB players who post here.
I remember when:
Dakka was a bricks and mortar store and I sent Russ a copy of the tyranid codex 6 months pre-release (only the hive tyrant wings cost changed)
When Malfred was new and every thread on every forum had a reply from him (so not much has changed)
When Snord and I would fight incessantly
When obi-wan-phanobi left to disappear into the ether that is 'real life'
The numerous rebirthings of the
OT board (which is still going strong despite almost being killed in an early incarnation by Kyoto Destroyer of Boards)
When bugswarm was banned
When KWade stood down as MOD :S
The abduction of the
CCG forum as a hidden
OT forum for around 6 months and over 5000 posts before we were rumbled by Russ's missus.
When the modelling forum was much more active with top notch painters will ing to help us average painters out, unfortunately with so many painting and modelling specific websites now this is less than it used t be.
When Barphranges built a reaver titan from styrofoam and card and it looked better than the
FW one. Then he'd pull out a transforming vehicle just because he could.
When 'Plaid not, lest ye be plaid' was bandied around with wild abandon....
When September 11 happened and I was on night duty at work in a rural hospital with 4 TVs lined up, all on different news channels, typing up the latest news to the US guys who didn't seem to know what was happening.
When the 'Divine Light' first and foremost of the chain stories was ruined by me in the third post by naming the daemon prince protagonist.... Cecil.
When I wasn't a mod and could enjoy reading threads instead of having to decide if it was appropriate or not.

So to all those who have come and gone (Ryan the Nines, Eathos, Drew Riggio, Gorthor, Mastiff, Snord, The Phantom Lord, etc, etc) and those still here (especially the 'old timers') thanks for the great memories and for making dakka my internet home away from home where I come because despite all the changes it still feels like the great dakka of old...
