BTW, how did you finish? In the attempt to try something new, I had the worst record ever at that tourney (0-3).

However, I did play some fun players and see some pretty cool armies.

Last time I bring an army that I haven't even playtested.

I did pretty well considering I brought 14 grey knight allies. Actually, the deepstrikng greyknights were pretty useful in capturing objectives.

Game one I got destroyed by the Tau player. I actually got the secondary objective, but he rocked my socks off. We were on that city fight map that easily had 80% terrain. He was able to isolate my gunline and use the terrain to prevent me from being able to return fire. He got primary and tertiary objective.

Game two I won against the space marine player with three dreads and the rhinos. Chaplain with fist owned two bike squads and a dreadnought. Grey knights deepstruck on to claimm his table edge.

Game three was against the non-zilla nid list but we only got through three turns before time was called. That one ended up being pretty close, but there were two highlights. One, shrouding actually did something for me. An opponent finally failed to shoot me because of shrouding. And two, my mystics allowed me to hose a deep striking lictor. I also had a squad of 8 assault marines survive 3 rounds of combat against 30 hormagaunts (not sure, the ones that count as beasts so they had to start off the board for escalation).

I had a good time, but I wish I had had a chance to see more of the armies. They should have had some display time between two of the rounds. I didn't even see the army that won best theme, or your army for that matter Charlie.

What'd you bring? How could an eldar list in this day and age get the "whipping boy" prize?

It was definitely a first for me: whipping boy. I acheived a total of 6 points regarding victory conditions.

Game 1 vs. IG. Game only went 4 turns as my opponent had well over 100 infantry models and a good assortment of tanks. His first shot of the game summed up my tourney: Basilisk round hits my Fire Prism, glances it and rolls double 6's. My Harlies did well, but too late to make a difference. I lost one Autarch to a Commisar w/ Powerfist. He was positive that the Commissar was not an IC, thus I could not pick him out of the unit. I guess I need to learn the IG codex better. I acheived the secondary objective.

Game 2 vs. Mech IG. I fared a bit better casualty wise, but misread the primary objective. I thought out deployment zones were divided in 12" increments and we would get points for every section of our opponent's deployment zone. As a result, I had two Falcons and a squad of Harlies in his back line. Last turn, he put one 5 man Stormtrooper squad back in his deployment zone and denied me all the points.

Game 3 (well, I was playing for last place at this point) vs. trait Marines. I thought they were Ultramarines, my first mistake (he had counter attack and true grit). I played on the cityfight table, but my opponent wanted to give a 5+ cover save if within 2" of ruin sections and no area terrain. At this point of the tourney, I ageed as it wouldn't make a difference in my standings. His FW Land Raider shot an ordnance template at me. Even though it was a direct shot, he insisted it caused pinning at -1. I conceded the question and played on. He would place the template at the edge of one Guardian squad in an attempt to catch a Harlequin. Of course, he succeeded and pinned my Harlies. They got shot to death the following turn by his Terminators.

Overall, I simply did not know how to play a mech Eldar army. This, combined with uncanny rolls from my opponents to drop my Holofield laden tanks crushed my army. Without the tanks, my Eldar were just too fragile and completely inept at countering all the armor I faced.

In summary: I played horribly and did not design a very good all comers list.

However, there is another tourney there the end of June and I'll be back from training. I'll most likely go back to my tried and true list and give another go.

I had a lot of fun at this particular tourney, but then I guess it's easy to have fun when you do well. :p I got best general, but I didn't get best overall. It could have been either my painting or my sportsmanship that dropped me down. Probably it was the painting score since I never had any arguments, but I think the Tau player I faced in the second round was a little annoyed with my choice to bring down all his anti-tank guns. Really it's not my fault he only brought two railguns, and he let me corner his hammerheads with my fire dragon carrying falcons, but what I consider "strategy" he may have considered "unsportsmanlike playing." Later in the tournament I heard him complaining about holo-fields, but he only caused two glancing hits the whole game! It wasn't my holo-fields that saved me.

My opponents' did not have your opponents' luck, and my falcons stayed in the air all day. Twice I had my wave serpent dropped, but one of those times my dire avengers weren't in it and we were already on turn 5, so it hardly mattered. Escalation really worked in my favor in the last game, since it let me keep my falcons off a terrain-barren board on the always-perilous first turn.

The thing I liked about this tournament was the mix of army lists. Of course there were more marine players than anything else, but we also had Imperial Guard, Eldar, Tyranids, Chaos, Grey Knights and Tau: pretty much everything except Sisters, Necrons and Dark Eldar.

I plan on attending the tourney in June, but I'll have to go back to what I'm familiar with. There were definitely some aspects of my army selection that did not suit my playing style.

My only gripe about the tourney is I feel the organizers should declare what the terrain is for each table. I try to be easy going, but quickly realized in every game, I put myself at a very big disadvantage by agreeing to my opponents' desires for terrain designation.

Hm, yeah, I can see that. One of the boards I played against had pretty unambiguous terrain: it literally blocked LOS. My second game was against a fellow skimmer-player, so we wanted the same things. The last board I played on had almost nothing that could conceivably block LOS, so again there wasn't much to discuss. I think my biggest problem with the terrain was how different it was from board to board.

I don't know if I'll go to the one in June. I'm mostly concerned about the heat. It got pretty warm in there, and it wasn't that warm a day. In June it will be hell.

p.s. I wrote up my experience in a battle report, which I posted in the BR forum.

There's a Yahoo group called Skull n Bonez for gaming in NC. It mostly focuses on events in the Triangle, but events in other cities often get posted as well. The Greensboro tournaments have been announced there.

They have also been announced on the forum for Sci-Fi Genre, the FLGS where I play in Durham.
