I've never played an Apoc game. Do pie plate tend to dominate the battle? I'm thinking about putting my chaos minions in one that is coming up in a couple of weeks.

"Dominate the battle" is a hard term to cover.
In general, it all depends on who you're playing, what army it is and how "friendly" the game is (in our friendly games, my group doesn't play "D" weapons).
More than likely, you will see more than you would in a typical game. Probably even proportionally more. Where is gets tricky is the KINDS of weapons used.
Will you see "D" weapons? Clover templates?
It's hard to say, in general.
I know you specified "Pie Plates," but I'm covering all the templates, simply due to the fact that the old "pie plate" isn't the Big Kid on the block any more.
What I WILL tell you is that, if you're playing in a game "organized" by a local game store, you can expect everyone to bring their goodies. You'll probably see every template Apoc has to offer... and a LOT of them.
Hope this helps.

Depending on the table layout and the armies your fighting against, pie plates can be useless to very effective. The armies basically start out within charge range, so there is the potential for the whole board to turn into a massive melee. On the flip side, you can end up with a huge slugfest game where pie plates will dominate the anti-troop portion of the game.
Either way, lots of anti-tank is nice.

Ah I didn't know the armies started out so close. I was expecting that they would be deployed on a longer table that would put them farther apart. In that case I will take Kharn and his merry band of idiot as opposed to 1K sons.

Pie plates, no. Extra large supreme-pizza with everything on them plates, yes.
