I've never done a Warhammer army before, but I've recently gotten the fantasy bug. Wanting to do something a bit off the beaten path, I scoured my Warhammer RPG books for inspiration. I found it in Knights of the Grail, the guide to Bretonnia. There, they describe the Herrimaults, outlaws and outcasts from Bretonnian society who strive for equality with corrupt nobles, led by a Faceless, and hooded or masked leader.

Basically, it's Robin Hood, and has been represented in previous editions by Bertrand the Brigand, Hugo le Petit and Gui le Gros. However, a Bretonnia army is not what I had in mind. Robin Hood is an archer of legend, and his men are expert ambushers and woodsmen. To me, that means only one possibility: Wood Elves.

So, a 'counts as' Wood Elves army. Here's what I came up with so far, as far as what units represent.

Highborn/Noble - The Faceless
Spellweaver/Spellsinger - Wandering Damsels taking up the cause, or possibly Imperial hedge wizards on the run hiding in Bretonnia
Glade Guard - Your basic Herrimault, represented by Bret Bowmen and Empire Militia
Eternal Guard - The Faceless' bodyguard, represented by Bret Men-at-Arms
Wild Riders - Former Yeomen, represented by, you guessed it, Yeomen
Waywatchers - Elite ambushers, represented by Bret Bowmen and Glade Guard

Bertrand and Hugo would make appearances as a Shadow Sentinel and Guardian, respectively.

Any feedback, any ideas on other units, please let me know!

hadn't expected that I thought you must have been doing the kights in black armour and deformed peasants (the Merry men of Mousillo) it sounded kind of morbid black humour.

Anyway it sounds like an alright idea so long as you tell whoever your playing what they count as

I don't expect you to die a meaningless death I expect you to die for the emperor now CHARGE

How are you working in Gui Le Gros?

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Not sure yet. Probably a standard bearer.

I want this to be representative of a band from Mousillon, for several reasons. First, there are no more corrupt nobles than those in Bretonnia; I imagine this would lead to a surge in outlaws and rebels in the area. It also explains conflict with just about any other faction, and ties in with the color scheme I want to use.

As far as modeling and painting, I'm going to order some West Wind hooded Pict heads; I want to avoid any heads with helmets or armor. Color-wise, I'm thinking lots of muted colors. The Citadel Foundation paints are going to be very useful. I picture the people of Mousillon to be very drab, and certainly outlaws hiding in the forests would stay away from bright vibrant colors. Some of the former soldiers might have pieces of clothing from their service, in shades like Fenris Grey and Iyanden Darksun. I also want every model in the army to have a single red item, a belt or sash or hood, to flaunt the Bretonnia sumptuary laws, forbiding certain colors to anyone but the nobility.

This test figure is representative of how my Waywatchers will appear.
