Subject: Venerable Dreadnoughts as Counter Attack?

I play gunline marines and the majority of the games I play usually end up looking something like this: A couple of rounds of shooting and then my enemy's dedicated assault hits me. I've added assault marines, and these help, but I still only have one squad of them. I've tried adding powerfists to my squads, but they're expensive and in my smaller squads they rarely get to swing.
So I was wondering if Venerable dreadnoughts with armor plates could fill a counter assault role in my gunline. I was thinking about bringing two armed with TL Lascannons. The Lascannons could fit into the funline and the Venerable gives them survivability. Has anyone ever done this and if so, with what level of success?

I run a 2000pt Blood Angel Army and regularly have between two to three dreads. I find them extremely useful for fire support and assisting assualts.
My usual load out is one Dread with claw/storm bolter and lascannon, one Dread with claw/storm bolter and assualt cannon, and the last dread has claw/storm bolter and a weapon depending on the rest of my armies setup, if i need for fire support then assualt cannon, if I'm lacking anti-tank then i give him las or melta.
Not a fan of the venurable upgrade myself, used it quite a few times didn't didn't seem to complement my army. But I can see its uses as well.

Dreads work pretty nice but you need to have some more vehicles for it. Othervise you will be stuck with 1-2 targets with AV and have a huge chance of getting to eat all the anti tank fire the other guy brings.
Another possible defence is the 5 man 2 AC terminator squad.

Usually gunlines rely on characters for counter assault. Add a chaplain to the assault squad and J-pack your commander with L-claws.

You also might consider a terminator assault squad with furious charge and lightning claws. 215 points for a real counter assault squad.

Thanks for the advice. I'll play test the different suggestions. I wish I had more SM Armor. I have a 3rd dreadnought, a predator, and some rhinos.

Well, assuming the new SM dex will look like the Dark angels dex, I would say take three dreads, two or three preds, and some rhinos. Nasty bit of nastiness that is.
