It sounds simple on the surface, white paint, but underneath lurks all sorts of complexities, does it have a blue tint to it, does it go on smoothly, does it @(#*%& cover in less than 10 coats, is it available in something other than a $65 paint set?

Seriously though, up until the present time I've been using entirely GW paints, both Citadel Colour, and Foundation. And I am starting to get sick and tired of the anemic coverage of Skull White.

So, I have started this thread to get some feedback on the other brands of white paint, ie, RPP, RMS, etc.

I am looking for one which is similar in colour to Skull White, goes on smoothly, and doesn't take seemingly 10 coats to get coverage.

Please tell me there's something like that out there... other than the Foundation White paint which is only available in the GW Starter Set.

Privateer Press' P3 Morrow White is good and will generally cover in two or three coats max. If you're looking for an off white color, they have Menoth White Base and Highlight. I use both of these colors and it takes two coats of the the base to fully cover black primer. I only use the Highlight to highlight, so I don't know how well it'll cover by itself.

i`ll second Thanatos73 . P3 has some nice whites that cover better than most I`ve worked with.

I've been told that the pigment levels in the Rackham paints is fairly high, somewhat like the Foundation paints

I have had good luck with the Menoth white base but I admit I use only in very small areas mostly for checker patterns on Orks shoulders.
It does cover the rusted metal paint in only a couple of coats though.

I've had a lot of success with using Skull White over Astronomicon Grey (Foundation), over black.

Are you trying to paint skull white over a black undercoat directly? Or are you building your white up from a grey base?

I haven't worked with foundation paints much, but I think if you tried Redbeard's suggestion, you'll be much happier when you go to paint whites. That, and you'll be adding more depth to your white.

I've used codex grey > fortress grey > skull white extensively in the past on my marines. And I'm very happy with how that comes out. And that's usually one coat each for the greys and MAYBE two for the white depending on how big the detail is.

I'm priming white and then shading down from there.

To be specific, I'm using the new GW Washes over a white basecoat to do a tabletop quality paintjob quickly and easily. (Prime white, touch up primer (unfortunate step, easier with airbrush once I get one), wash flesh blue, drybrush flesh ice blue, wash flesh blue, wash carapace red, wash carapace black, drybrush carapace red, wash carapace red, wash bone sepia). The problem is in touching up areas the washes hit that they shouldn't, ie, getting blue on the bone area before I lay down the sepia wash. I want something to take that back up to white quickly and easily.

are you using it straight from the pot?

I prime mine white, dip in blue/black and use skull white.

mines modified though I added about 3ml of water and a marble to help mix. it works great. if it is taking a lot of coats, you need to have a lighter basecoat and not use such thick a wash.

I use a mix of the Foundation Astronomicon Grey (I think, it's the really light one you can get as a single) and then a layer of craft paint over black primer for things that are stark white like fluers on Sister's Immolators. For things that I want a little more shading on like the white top of my landraider I go over it with the Foundation, use a black or blue ink wash, then use a thinned white craft paint, almost a glaze/wash, and just do a lot of layers. I have done both on models to good effect.

wash-away: It depends on just how patient I'm feeling at the time.

At any rate, I picked up some Liquitex Titanium White, which was recommended to me on the Reaper forums, and I'll give it a go.

On the bright side, I think I've found the paint scheme for my 'nids, I just need to try it out on a full brood to make sure it's good.

depends on your primer
if you prime black, definately go with the astronomicon grey (or dehneb stone if you want a warm white) to highlight then 2 thin coats of skull white to brighten it up

if you prime white, do a wash of the grey / stone, then go back up to white

I like the menoth white also, but I really prefer skull white as a "pure" white

well I don't have the patience to mix the paint somewhere else and close the pot. I add more water as needed and the marble helps to keep it all mixed well. just remember if your working for a couple hours to close and shake your pot every now and again.
