Now I' Rebuilding my Bretonnian Army, now using only my fully painted Minies I'm throwing together a small force for Practice Games, Now I know it isn't fully Tournament Legal, But it it will serve as the Foundation for my Army as I repaint (and Finish Painting Others) my 4th & 5th ed Minnies.


Paladin W/Shield, Lance & Barded Warhorse -80 Pts (Leads my KotR unit)

Damsel -70pts

Knights of the Realm: 5 KotR Inc. Command Section -144pts

Bowmen: 10 Bowmen W/Light Armor Inc. Command Section -90pts

Now that comes to 384 pts leaving 116pts for options, I personally upgrade the Damsel to a Lv2 Caster giving me another 81 pts to play with for Magic Items and Virtues.


I'm getting ready to strip and Re-paint a Squad of Men-at-Arms with a some LotR Character Minis for the Command Section, for the 10 minnies in the squad will push up the army cost by 102pts and another 10 Armored Bowmen (either part of the Established Troop or as a new Unit) for another 70 pts (90pts if I can find their Command Section and form them as a new Troop) and I'm also looking to add three more KotR for an other 72pts pushing it up to a 750pt army (or possibly 1000 if I go Nuts with the Magic).

Now the only thing keeping the Army from Tournament Legal is an 80pt (+magic standrd cost) A$20 odd (New Cost) Paladin/Standrd Barer Mini (my old one was Stolen at a Games Day back in the 90's), but I may have a line on a 2nd hand one.

So what do Folks think of my Unit and Up-grade plans? Good, Bad, Ugly or just Plain Wrong.

Your army sounds fine. I would personally drop the bowmen if possible for some cheap Knights Errant. Take five, give the Damsel a horse, and you're looking at another Lance block.

I'd drop the command on the bowmen and buy yourself another unit of knights for the damsel to hide in. When it comes to WHFB, the more, the merrier.

ATM I've got about another 15 Bowmen Painted and ready to use, It's just due to the Rules where putting on the Games for the time being I don't have the pts to field them, they where part of a unit back in the day, but I'm sure the Front Rank & Command Section where among the Metals that walked when my Standard Barer went missing back in 2000. also at least some of those Bowmen (and possibly some Knights) will be loaned out to an other player who also wants to play KoB.

as to the Damsel she is the Metal Foot Mini that came on the front of a WD many years ago, my Mounted Damsel was among the Minies Stolen (I lost what was then a couple of Hundred Bucks of Metals that day not including some LE minnies).

Priorities are striping and Painting the Men at Arms for my own use or to loan out and to get some more KotR minies painted to loan out till we go 750 or 1K points. But I do have a line on some 2nd hand Minies, If I can get a Mounted Damsel and some KEs or Squires I may give it a try.

I should point out that Twice (out of three matches) now my Basic List has beaten the "Bretonnian Battalion" Boxed set, thanks in no small part to taking Jade Magic and scoring either Master of Stone or the Wood to Explode Characters and Bowmen and Mistress of the Marsh to lock down the other guys KotR as well as Gift of Life to let my Palidin act as a Wound Sink.

The Guy I've bean playing has a real Speed Fetish (wants to drop all his PBIs for more Cav as soon as he can afford the Modles), but after our past few games is rethinking only wanting to take Amber Magic (once he gets a Damsel) so he can get "The Wolf Hunts", a spell he has only a 18 & 1/3% chance of geting if he takes a Lv2 Damsel.

Don't drop the bowmen ..
Drop the armour of them and make them skirmishers-> -1 to hit to shooting and 360 degrees of LOS is much better then a measly 6+ save that is ignored anyway by s4 or higher attacks
command option on such a small unit ain't worth it..
But on a bigger unit it can be usefull..
A big unit 20+ will also make quite a big impression when shooting on any units that marchblocks your knights.

I never give my bowmen any upgrades, I like the stakes. I never move my bowmen anyway and make a great speed bump on a flank or in the center. You know you have to have a Battle Standard bearer, I will have to dig out my lists and post them. I am 24-2-1 with my Bretonnians since I started playing Fantasy again.

The blood of the living will flow and their dead shall swell my ranks.

2400pts- Vampire Counts
3000+pts- Bretonnia
3000+pts Dark Eldar

Ok just went to a 1000pt (Actually 998pt) list that is as follows

Paladin W/Shield, Lance & Barded Warhorse -80 Pts (Leads KotR I) (+ Virtue of Discipline & Birth Sword of Carcassonne 50pts)

Paladin Standard Barer on Barded Warhorse -74pts (+ Valours Standard & Virtue of Duty 80pts)

Damsel -70pts (+lv2 Upgrade & Staff of Sorcery 85pts)

Knights of the Realm I: 8 KotR Inc. Command Section -216pts (+ Battle Banner 25pts)

Knights of the Realm II: 6 KotR Inc. Command Section -144pts

Bowmen: 10 Bowmen I: W/Light Armor Inc. Command Section -90pts

Bowmen: 10 Bowmen II: W/Light Armor Inc. Command Section -90pts

I Know spending almost a Quarter of my Points on options is a bit Old School and frowned on by many, but that's the way I Roll with Tricked out Heroes and Larger than normal Units (I'm looking to bulk KotR I out to 12 Modles at 1.5K pts and 15 at 2K pts KotR II will be 9 modles at 1.5K and I looking at a 9 Modle KotR III unit at 2K)

Though I want to wait till I step up to 1.5K I've got almost all of the Models I need, waiting on a 3 Model box of RAF from Mail Order (Saving me 16 Oz Bucks) along with a bunch of Bits all coming to A$100 (Including Postage & Handling) I picked up a Box of KotR and my Army Standrd last month, rolled over my Excess in to this months Budget that got me 3 RAF in Individual boxes (at A$22 a pop) and an other box of KotR.

Drop the armour, command from the bowmen. A they'll be skirmishers and B if anyone gets to them they're dead anyway. Give your Damsel a mount so she can hide in one of the KotR units. If possible a small (ish) man-at-arms unit might be an idea (to take on or at least pin-down any fliers attempting to take out your archers. In a battle what'll probably happen is that the knights will go charging off and do some damage. While that's happening your archers will probably die (inevitable with Breton armies). Also instead of the staff of sorcery go for some dispel scrolls.

I'm all for expanding your knight units a bit, but if you're going to bring them up to 15, you're probably better off creating new ones. Also as you start heading up, those men at arms cannot be ignored. I always like to throw in a Paladin with the Virtue of Empathy (but that's just me and fluff).
