Test of GW new Washes color
The goal: through painting to see the functions of these new colors
Test subjects: Orks
All the orks are painted from green to white, some of their bodies are painted to different color like the picture shows below
Each part got washed , the four arms in the middle are washed by different methods:
(from left to right) GW normal color+ matt medium+ water; GW normal color +water; GW ink; GW washes.
Result
Through the four colored body test we know the lighter is the base color , more visible is the effect of the Washes .
When the base color is metallic ,the Washes will cover some of the shine of the Metallic color.
Through the four methods arm test we find that the effect of Washes is the best one:
Ink wash will give a gloss effect on the subject ;
Normal color +water will result traces on the subject ;
and the result of matt medium one is similar to the Washes one, which is as I predicted ,the new Washes color is
normal color plus some kind of medium, which makes the pigment thinned down but not loss the quality of the paint
and makes the dry color more smooth without trace. But however the effect of Washes is still better, comparing to
the matt medium one, there is more color left on the plane area and less color left in the crack, which make the final
effect more smooth and balance.
Conclusion
Washes is not only a good way to deal with orks ,also a good stuff to against other races in the galaxy ,but the 12ml
contain is a little less, because we don’t need to thin down the color to use. The effects of Washes mix with other
color will need further Experiments.

thats a great black!
I have been trying out the new washes and very very happy.
Been doing the grots and very quick process.
I sugest for orks. White, goblin then green wash.
I find a green wash strait over the white leaves it a little light for my liking. Maybe im not slapping it on enough though.

I bought a whole set of inks based on the raves I've been reading and that comparison of the red arms is more great proof.
Between foundation paints and these washes GW's paint department is sure coming on strong.

I also bought the Washes set because of the great reviews and pictorials I've seen online. I typically buy Vallejo paints, but the Washes and Foundation paints now have me buying GW paints again.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Rather than, or preferably, in addition to matte medium you should add flow aid and compare the result. I think it would give a closer match to the washes and it's really all that's missing from what is otherwise a very nice article.

I will gladlý test it if I got this flow aid in hand, btw I have some AV retarder and glazing medium ,is these similar to the flow aid you mentioned?

I believe glaze medium acts much like a flow enhancer

Glaze medium is a thicker more viscous material that is identical to matte medium aside from being glossy. (At least liquitex's is). They kind of do what flowaid does in that you can thin the paint without adding surface tension like you would get if you were thinning with pure water.
Retarder is generally also thick. (again, at least liquitex is)
Flow-Aid, or fluid mediums, are clear and look just like water, and you have yo dilute them 1:20 flow-aid:water but they do just what the washes claim to do and "flow into the creavases" simply by breaking up the surface tension of water. This is the only reason I mentioned flowaid is because I figured it would let you more closely match the washes consistency.
Though it isn't really needed.

Very nice demo shots.
Some of them aren't so great, mainly the reds, but the browns, blues, black and purple all look VERY nice.
With a little practice, knowledge of the viscosity that works best, and the right combination of basecoat and wash, you could really crank out some good results.
This technique certainly can produce masses of rank and file troops, but even a really nice model could have areas of this.
The black torso is particularly disheartening for me, since I've already taken the time to paint 30+ Goffs with layered highlights on their cloth, and that looks as good.
