I'm not that familiar with the Space Marine Vehicles so this maybe a stupid question.

I have an extra Rhino, unassembled. If I want to model a "standard" predator, whirlwind, vindicator or whatever other type of SM tank (except the landraider) can I just buy the separate whirlwind/predator/vindicator sprue? Are all of those vehicles based on the same vehicle chassis?

Yes. All marine tanks, exept the land raider and its variants, use the rhino chassis.
