It's definitely a good start. If you were to build back up to white using some selective glazing of skull white, you would have all of the shading and highlighting you'd need for the basic armor.
I'd be interested in seeing the completed termies.
BTW this was one of the first things I thought of after seeing the first wash demo pieces on the net.
I'm thinking of using this method when I get around to painting up my new DW army. With my previous one, I spent a lot of time building up layers, but frankly, these look as good as my previous results.
