Let me start out by saying, that I´m not sure if Discussions is the right place, or if it should be in Fluff for Nutters:
Ive been on and off with Warhammer since about 10 years now and the only things that keeps me in the hobby is the fluff and looking at other peoples purdy armies.
Ever since I sold all my stuff (SM & CSM) about three years back I´ve been investing alot into the BL products (more the novels than the art books but oh well), as well as the pc-games.
Now I dont know how others here feel, but the BL range is driving me up the wall.
Nowadays, there are so many Storylines that its pretty much impossible to keep track of them all.
Theres the Nilla-marines, Ciaphas Kain, Gaunts Ghosts, Horus Heresy, appearently the Word Bearers will also get some laugh etc. And thats just a few, and thats just 40K.
I´ve asked the BL staff several times for a complete list of their range (kinda useful since I try to collect) and did manage to get my hands on one at some point of time. Obviously with the next wave of releases, it became obsolete once again. The fact that they release such a horrendous amount of novels throughout the year dosent help either. Neither does the fact that some books seem to be gone before I can get my greasy hands on them, or they sell for 50 bucks a piece over at amazon.
Now of course its a longshot, but what can i say, im all into optimism.
Has anyone here done the work to actually try and keep track of all thats around?
I actually think that it would be a neat idea to do an article on whats around, what book belongs to what series, what book references some other series and of course, which novels are included in the famed omnibus (one thing that amazon is not able to tell you). I have quite a few books, but obviously I dont have them all, making it difficult to go through this all by me lonesome self.
Thoughts, ideas, input?
Rant over. Thx for listening.

You want interesting summaries of major events-check out the Sabbat Crusade and 13th Black Crusade campaign books. These are non-codex books (fluff only) detailing the events through the respective campaigns. I found them to be the most interesting of the fluff books. I especially remember, pics showing a continental shelf before and after an orbital bombardment.
But I don’t think you’re going to get an overarching fluff item. The closest to that is the codexes themselves, which give good summaries of their respective races, and why they are all so jealous of the humble Imperial guardsman. The big basic rulebook (V5 coming out) should also be excellent in that regard.

Well, thanks for the input but thats not really what I meant. But I appreciate the effort.
The main reason why I will be picking up one of the V5 BBB is the fact that theres suppose to be loads of fluff.
What im really looking for is a way to track what books are out, what series to they belong to and where in the series are they set (for example book 4 of series such and such).
Im thinking that an article would be an excellent way to do that but since I dont own every single book it will be difficult for me to allocate every novel or art book to a series or establishing any bridges to another series.

Oh I don't think you'll find that.

Dont get me wrong, I dont have a problem writing the article myself. Not at all!
Id just like the input from some people that collect as well trying to make it as accurate as possible.
Obviously all that work would only be necessary if more than one person (me in this case) are interested in this.

Really?
Hmm, which ones? I have about a dozen from around the early 90s. Deathwing, Route 666, Plaguebearer and others IIRC. I don't know how well they did, but although they have been reprinted recently there was a gap of several years before they got into printing books again. Perhaps the first lot were in-house, the BL stuff is Random House (I think).

They don't even have to be that old. Last year I worked in a used book store that used Amazon's used book prices as a base as to what we would pay for used books. Normally a paperback fiction book was a quarter. Some BL books from this decade came through and we paid upwards of $15. I started researching this, and even recently out of print BL books could be listed at $20-150 from Amazon's vendors. We paid ~$8 for the first Witch Hunter book. It was out of print, but I had just bought it the week before at cover price from the Glen Burnie bunker.

Yeah, Guns of Tanith was listed for $75 on one of Amazon's vendors. But then it was also listed as $7 from another, so I don't think that's the most reliable indicator.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack |
