The Zuid'Ca Campaign

The Planet Zuid'Ca, In the Western Fringes of Imperial Space, located near the Halo Stars- The site of Black Templar's outpost fortress 23-Alpha. The planet was intended to be a launching pad for a Templar's incursion towards the Halo Stars themselves, to liberate areas of the Emperor's Galaxy that not even the Glorious crusades managed to touch. Equipment and supplies were ferried to the planet, as well as a regiment of Imperial Guard, the 24th Lathian who were tasked with the construction of several landing bays and refuelling stations.

Construction was progressing well and plans of advance were being drawn up by the Templar's strategic command, led by Marshal Morne van Ryneveld on the battle barge 'Voortrekker', at this time on it's way to the system via warp travel. Three days before making the transition out of the Warp however, contact was lost with the Imperial Guard station on Zuid'Ca and all attempts to reach them resulted in failure and walls of static hissing from all communications units.

Upon emerging from the Warp, the Templar's tried once more to reach the station, but were met with the same failure. Morne van Ryneveld ordered the barge into stationary orbit and sent an advance team down to the surface to investigate the seemingly abandoned 24th Lathian Camp.

The landing party were approximately 12km away from the camp when they made sudden contact with the enemy............

GAME 1- 400pt Combat Patrol
(Black Templar's vs. Necron Collective Splinter Force)

BLACK TEMPLARS-
10 Initiates (ccw & Bolt Pistols, Flamer, Power Fist & ccw) 'Squad Stellenbosch'
6 Initiates (Bolters, Plasma Cannon) 'Squad Pretoria'
6 Initiates (Bolters, Heavy Bolter) 'Squad Natal'

NECRONS-
10 Necron Warriors (Gauss Flayers) 'Collective Shard 1'
10 Necron Warriors (Gauss Flayers) 'Collective Shard 2'
1 Necron Wraith (Claws & Barbed Tail) Collective Slither'

Scenery-
24 Inch x 48 Inch Table, played longways
One hill in either deployment zone, trees scattered in the middle area, along with a rock wall and several hedges on the left side

The Large Templars squad deployed on the left side, as far forward as possible and behind some trees, both 6-man units positioned themselves on the hill to the right

One Necron Warrior Unit positioned itself on the hill in the middle of the deployment zone, the other squad to their right and the Wraith hugging the left side of the table

** Necrons won the toss and elected to go fist**

NECRON TURN ONE-

The Wraith moved 12" directly forward and ended behind a clump of trees, shielded from the sight of the 2 6-man Templar Units on the hill. Both Necron warrior units advanced forward out of the deployment zone and there was no shooting

BLACK TEMPLAR TURN ONE-

The 10-man Templar unit moved forward and into the cover of a nearby clump of trees and neither 6-man unit moved from the hill. The Heavy Bolter of squad Natal took aim at 'Collective Shard 1', scoring 3 wounds and downing one Necron Warrior. The Plasma Cannon of squad Pretoria took aim at the other unit of Necron Warriors, managing to down one.

NECRON TURN TWO-

The Necron wounded by the Heavy Bolter stood back up again, but the Warrior downed by the plasma cannon stayed down and was destroyed for good.
The Wraith once again skitted forwards 12" and ended up sheltering behind a tree in front of the Templar's hill, out of sight of both heavy weapons and both Necron Units moved forward 6".
3 Necrons from the undamaged 'Collective Shard 1' could just reach one Templar from squad Stellenbosch, scoring 2 hits but no wounds

BLACK TEMPLARS TURN TWO-

Squad Stellenbosch moved towards the Wraith with the intention to assault and squad Natal moved down the hill to the left.
The plasma cannon of squad Pretoria took aim at the 9-man Necron unit downing two. The flamer of squad Stellenbosch fired at the Wraith, failing to wound.
In the assault phase Squad Stellenbosch crashed into the Wraith, causing 6 wounds and destroying it (as there were no Necrons within 6" for 'we'll be back'). Squad Stellenbosch consolidated 4" towards the damaged Necron Unit

NECRON TURN THREE-

One of the damaged Necrons stood back up again and there was no movement for either Necron Unit as they chose to stand and rapid fie at Squad Stellenbosch.
A total of 36 shots caused 26 wounds, killing 8 of the Templars, leaving just the power fist and squad leader. The Templar's passed their morale check and thanks to Rightous Zeal they moved into combat with the (now 8-man) Necron unit.

BLACK TEMPLARS TURN THREE-

Squad Pretoria moved forward off the hill as it's only target was now in close combat. Squad Natal stayed where it was and fired the heavy bolter at the undamaged Necron Unit 'Collective Shard 1', scoring 1 wound which was saved. 4 of the bolter marines were also in line of sight, scoring 1 wound which managed to down a Necron Warrior.
In the assault phase, the unit leader of Squad Stellenbosch managed to cause 1 wound which was saved and in return he was killed by the Necrons. The Power fist marine then destroyed two Necrons and in turn win the combat for the Templars. The Necrons passed their morale check though and closed in around the remaining marine.

NECRON TURN FOUR-

The damaged Necron stood up and the unengaged unit moved 6" towards the Templar's line.
In the assault phase, the Necron unit failed to kill the last member of squad Stellenbosch and in return he killed two of the Necrons with his power fist. Once again the Necron unit passed its morale check.

BLACK TEMPLARS TURN FOUR-

Squad Pretoria moved forward around a tree to once again get line of sight on the unengaged Necron unit, catching them in a crossfire with squad Natal. Both units opened fire on the unit, downing three with bolter fire. The unit passed its morale check
In the assault phase the Necrons once again failed to kill the power fist marine and in return he killed one. The unit failed it's morale check and retreated only to be caught by the lone marine who finished the unit off in a sweeping advance and consolidated 1" towards the remaining Necron unit.

NECRON TURN FIVE-

Two of the damaged necrons were removed and the unit chose not to move at all, but rather rapid fire into squad Pretoria, killing three of them. The squad passed it's morale check and moved 3" towards the enemy

BLACK TEMPLARS TURN FIVE-

The power fist marine passed his man alone test and stayed put, as did the other two units. Despite all the firepower, only two Necrons were downed. The plasma cannon overheated but the Marine's power armour saved him from harm.

NECRON TURN SIX-

One Necron stood back up again and the unit decided to rapid fire at squad Pretoria but failed to inflict any casualties and that was their brief turn over

BLACK TEMPLARS TURN SIX-

Again no movement, one Necron was downed by bolter fire and that was it. The plasma cannon overheated again but once again the power armour came to the marines rescue

FINAL RESULT-
Black Templars- 275pts
Necrons- 198pts

BLACK TEMPLARS VICTORY!!

As suddenly as they had appeared between the trees, the Necrons began to mysteriously phase from existence, leaving none of their broken forms behind. Brother Wynand, commander of the advance team surveyed the damage to his patrol and saw that squad Stellenbosch had been decimated. He keyed his communications device to the command centre awaiting in the battle barge in orbit-

"Command, this is Brother Wynand......advance team has encountered a small Necron force several km from the Imperial camp, despite taking casualties we were able to beat them off in the name of the Emperor"

A few seconds of static followed, before finally the voice of Marshal van Ryneveld broke the silence-

"Good work Brother Wynand, reinforcements are being sent via drop pod to your position- you will link up with them and make your way to the camp, find out if there any any survivors"

"As you wish my lord........."

As soon as the communique had finished, Wynand could see the familiar streak of fire in the sky that announced the arrival of the drop pods. He looked once more at the broken bodies of squad Stellenbosch and already knew they would find no survivors in the camp up ahead........

Like I said, feel free to leave any comments and criticisms if we got any rules wrong. I know it's difficult to follow a battle report without a map or pictures but I have a quick question-

1. In the combat, the power fist marine had 3 attacks on the charge and 2 after that- I played it as though every attack was treated as strength 8 with no save but was that right? Is it instead one power fist attack at all times and the rest as normal strength 4 ones?

Thanks for reading and hopefully in the next few days i'll be able to post a report of Game 2!

Nice battle report, you were right about the powerfist btw all his attacks can be made with it, at strength 8 with no saves if you so wish, however he will strike at iniative 1 when using it. Im a 40k returner myself and am looking forward to my first battle in like 10 years. Am expecting to make a fair few noob mistakes in that one. Can't believe no one has responded to your post though. Bloody miserable lot eh?!
Look forward to the next battle report.
