My friend (new to 40k) is building a Ork army and I'm looking for options......

Now I'm I just seeing things or is a Deff Rolla just a ridiculous killing apparatus? d6 str 10 attacks on unit it tank shocks, potential to shock mulitple units. If they stand and "death or glory" another d6 str 10 attacks. Good grief, what is not to like about that?

Anyone tried this on multiple battlewagons? What is downside? I understand the 10 rear armor on battlewagon, so counter assault could be brutal. Anything else?

battle wagons have their ups and downs

ups: ability to transport large mobs of meganobz
14 front AV.. very durable.. especially when flanked with trukks or buggies to remove LOS to side armor
huge variety of wargear

downs:
not as fast as a trukk, and expensive regardless of layout

even still.. more reliable by far than a looted wagon and there are a couple of good configs

shooty:

battle wagon, ard case, killcannon
you could add a couple of shootas, I did since thats how my looted russ was modeled. i field it like this since it fits the old armor values better

transport:
red paintjob, deffrolla, 2 big shootas (to ward off wpn destroyed results)
this one is a bit cheaper.. 13" move is nothing to sneeze at. put burna boyz or meganobz in it and have a field day

still.. not as cheap as fielding like 3 manz in a trukk. but then again a deffrolla can do some horrible things. why yes I'll ram your rhino, so i'll roll through your tac squad. does it death or glory? no? ok well take d6 str 10 hits. my vehicle then rams yours. take a str 7 hit on the side armor, oh its destroyed? cool. I still have 7 inches of movement in a straight line.. so what else happens to be in the way?
