Whoa...does that mean that if I get ASF and I'm in combat with Swordmasters or these Lumberjack dudes they still get to use their Initiative? That's brutal!

Then if his mount's no longer monstrous, why WOULDN'T he get the adidtional save from the barding?

The additional save bonus is from being mounted, not from barding. The bonus from being mounted takes his save to 0+. The rule for his armor only says that barding cannot affect his save.
