Ok so I used to run my SAG all alone in my backfield. Now that he can be targetted I've been trying to figure out where to put him, and now I think I found the perfect place...

My zapp gun battery. I was reading the rules for artillery for something else and then I noticed a really big rule change in there. Aside from gunners, all other crew and characters can actually fire their weapons at other squads than the guns themselves are targetting. Now nobody in a gun battery have weapons except a slugga on a runtherd, but he can shoot at a different target as well. But this is awesome for my mek. I really didn't want to attach him to a squad of lootas, I felt like the shot from the SAG would be wasted.

What do you guys think?

I prefer to stick it with a grotz unit. Cheap and effective at soaking up casulties.

I think the worst place to put the big mek would be in the zapp gun battery. Acouple of wounds on the battery could cause a test and the squad will have a L:8 max. That is too big a chance for my mek to end up running off the table. I would put him in a squad of boyz for the first couple of turns then maybe walk him into a squad of lootas later when the boyz need to move up to help.

I used to think that putting him with a small - 10 man grot unit was probably the way to go, but I think it's really just adding expense to an already relatively expensive model, with no real improvements.

If you attach him to a squad of boyz, then they are not planning on moving? So far I find that my mek is a relatively low value target, compared to my boyz that are heading towards the enemy lines. I certainly wouldn't want to stop a mob of boyz from moving forwards just to have a shot with the SAG. And attaching him to lootas isn't that much better than attaching him to the grots as far as leadership and durability are concerned unless you take a large squad. I would be placing the zap gun battery in the edge of cover and with three gunz and 9 or so grots should be able to take some hits. A bosspole for the mek would be manditory wherever you stick him I think, and I like the thought of still being able to fire my SAG at any target, and the zapps at a different one if neccesary. With the lootas, they all have to fire at the same. If lootas are best at taking down vehicles, I don't think at all that that is the best target for the SAG to be firing at. It's a troop killer.
