Khaine is the Eldar god of war. IIRC he is the reason that the Eldar youths are able to be possessed and turn into the Avatar.

He and the Harlequin's Laughing God were the two Eldar gods to survive the Fall of the Eldar, surrounding the birth of Slaanesh (the Daemon Codex hints that one of their goddesses is in the possession of Nurgle, so I guess the total is potentially three.)
The Harlequin God survived intact. Khaine was not quite as lucky-he was broken up into pieces that came to reside in the core of each of the Craftworlds fleeing the destruction of the old Eldar civilization. These became the individual Avatars. Usually there are inert. In times of war, however, they may be revived. A youth (the Young King, I believe, according to the 2nd edition Codex) is chosen and brought to the Avatar's chamber. The Young King and the Avatar are left alone, the Young King is never seen again, and the Avatar is revived for battle.
Khaine was also the key protagonist in one of the Eldar mythological cycle known as the War in Heaven. Someone else can fill in the details of how it got started, but it ended with Khaine's victory, and his blinding of the smith-god Vaul, who was then chained to his anvil to produce armarments for the war god.

Counts as a Daemon period, he's a physical manifestation of a warp derived entity. Being made of the warp makes you a Chaos God, dividing that essence into pieces makes daemons. So Khaine has been made into a bunch of Greater Daemons.

Khaine is Khorne imo. The Eldar are unknowingly worshipping Chaos!

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Not just in your opinion, Cheese Elemental. It was explicitly stated as such in the WFB 4th Edition Dark Elf book. Of Course that's Fantasy Khaine who is a technically separate entity from 40K Khaine depending on which fluff applies this month.

Khaine was the god of war and murder in Fantasy, I don't know if he still retains his murder god title in 40K.
He was literally smashed to peices during The Fall, when the Eldar got so much "Ima park my little red race car in ur garage LOL" (get it?) that they accidentally created Slaanesh.
Khaine: I Shall Destroy You, Vile Peice Of Sh-
Slaanesh: *SMASH*
That was how the Avatars were created, they are all pieces of Khaine himself. Shame the Eldar don't put him back together, then he could have another go at Slaanesh!
