Are stikk bomz completely useless for orks in 5th ed? Does anyone have any circumstances in which they are useful?

Well assaulting into cover and Int changed quite a bit. Stickbombs will allow you to go at the same time as guardsmen and regular sisters of battle, and not much else. Can either unit really hurt enough to bother with paying for wargear? I guess you can toss them at rear amour when assualting vehicles. but powerklaws should be enough for that task. I would say they are just another useless wargear option whose points could be used to buy even more boyz.

Thanks notabot187. I haven't picked up the new rules yet, but if you're correct then it seems to me that stikkbombz will still be useful. While you could suck up the casualties with more boyz, I think it would still be useful to minimize the number of casualties, particularly against those two armies. I hear that units can no longer consolidate into new assaults, so you probably want to preserve those bodies in combat in order to weather whatever incoming firepower hits next.

Will they ever be useful? Yes, it's possible to think of a time when they'd be nice.
Are they useful enough, often enough to purchase? Probably not.
If sisters or IG are camping in charge range while in cover, it's a good day for ork, because they will either win the combat (orks will most likely hold), the enemy will hold, or they'll be destroyed. Either way, you're either locked in combat or sitting in cover. Having cover against the combined firepower of those armies will be good.
Now, you could make the argument that smaller squads benefit more, and that's true, but the points paid for the stikkbombs could isntead bulk up units.
Anyway, the vast bulk of the time they don't help at all, and the rest of the time the combats aren't generally in doubt.

Stikkbombs are strength 4. Say a unit without a Nob gets locked up with Warwalkers or Sentinels, they have the ability to hurt them. I still believe they are not worth their points often enough.

I would give trukkboyz stikkbombz, as you can't really absorb much with that 6+ armor save.
with 30 orks, it gets more expensive and you can probably absorb those wounds rather than pay for stikkbombs.

Remember there are more types of games than 1500vs1500 scrums. For Apocalypse, it's usually best to "tool up" squads to the max. Thus, stikkbombz can be good. Just not usually.
