I've spent the evening working on plasma guns for my guardsmen (Thanks to those who suggested the metal pack from GW. As you said, using a razor saw does make them pretty easy to work with). I'm planning to follow the general technique outlined in the Dakka article on the subject - cutting off the plasma guns' existing stocks and mounting the chamber/nozzle assembly on other guard weapons. I'm posting my initial stick-tacked mockups - please let me know what you think (alternative ideas would also be appreciated).
I started playing with the grenade launchers first, since I'm planning to use all of the flamethrowers. I also like the fact that the big drum on the launcher adds some bulk to the guns. I've come up with three styles based on the grenade launcher so far, as shown in the pictures below:
1. Long style - This one definitely makes the gun look bigger. . .possibly too big for the guardsman to carry. I like the overall appearance of the gun, but I don't like the fact that I have to use one of the launcher stick handles since the guardsmens' arms aren't long enough to reach the grip.
2. Short style - This one was a little harder to make, but let me get one of the open hands under the grip. The weapon is bulky, but compact enough that it doesn't look like it would unbalance the wielder and cause him to fall over.
3. Short style with Side Handle - This one is basically the same as (2), but the carrier holds it by a secondary grip that stands out from the left side/top of the gun and runs parallel to the barrel (similar to the top/side grips on many light machine guns such as the BAR or Bren gun).
