In the fluff I've read about the start of the Horus Heresy, it seemed like Vulkan of the Salamanders was killed in the drop site massacre. I just read in the Black Templar codex, however that he was taking sides in the issue of the post Heresy breakup of the legions.
Did I just read the drop site fluff wrong, or is this a change?

Vulkan was said to be lost in the fluff about the dropsite massacre.
Lost is not the same as killed

Actual fluff is : Vulkan and Corax survived the trap. The only killed primarch there was Ferrus Manus.

And even that "kill" is a relatively new invention.

Originally, Ferrus was "lost" and Vulkan and Corx survived the entire Heresy, only to wander off at a much later date.

The new Fluff is starting to leave a lot to be desired.

Mr. Merritt's tinkering is not entirely appreciated.

Maybe so, but it feels more likely than the old notion that he was on mars somewhere but no-one knew about it. Besides, if the old fluff about the 'Necron construct' worm thing he broke before rejoining his legion is anything to go by for all we know he just WBB after losing his head and is wandering about the galaxy looking for it. If he could mould metal after the metal of the construct fused into his hand imagine what else ot did to him that we don't know about

The primarch of the Iron Hands as lonely"headless"stranger wandering the galaxy and requesting from anyone he meets:
you seen my head? no? sure?

The WBB thing may go for necrons when a tomb and/or spiders are near.FM is not a necron.
Would be total nasty if he meets Fulgrim again and asks for his Head.
