Did a search, and I could find this discussed recently, so...
Anyone around here play in the 40k tourney this last weekend at LAGD? I was under the impression that this tourney was 5th ed, right? If so, what did the do for missions and determining margins of victory? Just interested because Vegas is 2 weeks away. Thanks.

They were very lightly modified 5th edition missions from the rulebook.

By lightly modified I mean they had a couple of bonus objective points on top of the main objective points.

And VPs were used when objectives were tied.

One out of the three missions was Annihilation (Kill Points).

One mission used the 'Dawn of War' deployment which has the first turn as Night Fight, so I don't know why you heard there was lots of night-fighting.

the LVGT should be exactly the same (of course with two more missions).

Expect 2 of the 5 missions to be Kill Point based while the other 3 are objective based.

They are all basically standard missions from the rulebook.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?
yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
yakface's 40K rule #3: Codex does not ALWAYS trump the rulebook, so please don't say that!

Thanks, Yak.

Another question though. What determined the difference between a 20-point, 17-point and 13-point win like VP's did in the past?

Incorrect Yak, none of the missions used Dawn of War deployment. The first used Pitched Battle, the 2nd Spearhead and the 3rd Pitched Battle.

I have my mission packet still if anyone is interested in the secondary objectives they had listed.

17 points was the highest you could get from the PRIMARY mission objective. When I say Primary, I mean what the mission was about. For example, in the Seize Ground mission, 17 points could be earned if you had 2 more objectives than your opponent. There was a secondary objective worth 1 point and another secondary objective worth 2 points which would allow you to earn the full 20 by completing them all.

So was there no "minor victory" worth 13/14 points like in the past?

I wonder if this will create clumping in scores.

win primary 17 points
draw 10 points

first secondary objective 2 points
second secondary objectives 1 point

possible scores
0
1

11
12
13
17
18
19
20

hope that helps

Ah, I see, thanks. Ok, that's different. It looks like if you lose, you're out of the running. I know in the past there have been overall winners with a minor loss (7 points) to their record.

Thanks again.

yep you lose 1 game you are pretty much toast.
you max out at 83
85 is a min for 5 wins
in a 132 person 5 round event
you can end up with 4 undefeated players.
a sixth game should be added to these big events.

Yes there was a minor victory as well. Skkipper is incorrect. I thought I had my mission packet but I could not find it, unfortunately. A minor victory would have been having 1 more objective than your opponent in Seize the Ground, or having your objective and contesting the enemies in Capture and Control.

If it was a draw then Victory Points were added up. If the difference in VP was less than 175 then it was definitely a draw and I believe each person earned 10 points. If the VP was over 175 then the winner earned 11 I believe. I'm going by memory though.
