Just finished painting this guy, although I'm wondering if the bones are too yellowish. I was trying to keep them fairly dingy since they won't have had much time to be bleached by the sun yet, given that there is still flesh / muscle left on the model, but I'm of two minds about how they've actually turned out. They don't look quite this yellow in person but I can't seem to get a picture that captures the actual colors. Anyway, any opinions are welcome. Thanks!

I dig it. Very nice muscle bundles. Overall very 'pink' feeling. Might I suggest a heavy hit of gryphon sepia wash to dingy those bones some more as well as add some depth around them? Right now they seem to be 'floating' on the muscles instead of being embedded in them.

Solid work though overall.

I agree with grey_death, it's a lovely paint-job that really shows off the model, but it could use with some darkening up (except the fur) with an ink to look more decayed and gooey.

very nice, how long did they take to paints. Thumbs up here.

Just about finished with the second model, and I've given this one's bones a nice wash for comparison. I really wish I could get a good picture, it looks a lot better in person (they both do actually) =/ One of these days I'll badger hubby into actually making a photo box for me.

As to how long it took me to paint -- I'm not 100% sure. I painted the pink and white parts (not the muscles, but the areas like the face, ears, backs, etc) on five of them one day a few weeks ago when I had the paints sitting around on my palette. Yesterday I finished the one wolf and most of a second wolf so maybe -- 5-6 hours each? I paint ridiculously slowly though, so that probably isn't a fair assessment for someone else who would be doing them. The process is very simple, I'm just slow to apply it ^_^

Yeah, I was going to comment on the first set of photos that a little wash would do them good for adding a little definition - that second picture confirms that for me...so obviously you didn't need me to tell you that...

I like the wash on the second one better. Keep up the good work.

As for a light box for photos you can get a really nice one from Wal-Mart for about $35. comes with lights and a tripod for your camera.

Not that there is really any particular reason to post this, since they're already varnished, but anyway -- I'm just all excited that I finished the unit ^_^ I really, truly am the slowest painter ever so I have to take my celebrations where I can get them, even if they're only five-strong units QQ

First and foremost...
As has been said, the models look nice and the sepia wash would add tremendously to them.

That being said, I have a little problem with something you posted:

One of these days I'll badger hubby into actually making a photo box for me.

On Dakka, you're not "a girl." You're "a gamer." Equal treatment and all that... So, why put it off on HIM to build it. Get out there and do it yourself.

If you can paint/assemble/convert the heck out of minis, you can put together a simple little photo box.

There was a post on here somewhere with instructions. VERY easy!
Once I'm finished with my gaming area in the basement, I'll be searching for the article myself and building one.

Forget him! Go out and show him you don't have to sit around and wait until it's convenient for him.

Nice work! I have seen the models you have posted before and you never disappoint! I like the way our VC armies differ from each other too, I have a frozen feel to mine, my Dire Wolves are going to have a more bluish flesh. Great job and keep up the good work!!!

for good pictures try to fabricate a box with some black/grey construction paper glued to the inner walls.

this box is your "diorama display" but will also help your camera pick up the model alot better when taking a photo.

there should be a macro setting on your camera which allows you to take close up photos.

disable the flash and take a picture in alot of natural lighting (near a window during day time). use a tripod

That's right! I mean, if I was going to post on a knitting forum and wanted a new needle bag, would I wait for my wife to make me one? No! Because I would be a knitter! I would make one myself! lol. (I only say this because my wife is a knitter and there are funny knitting forums...not that I post to them...not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Anyway - as far as light box articles go, I haven't found any really good ones here on Dakka, but there's a few I've found through links on B&C. My personal favorites are Bill Huber's light box building tutorial (http://www.pbase.com/wlhuber/light_box_light_tent) and Commander Y's lighting tutorial (http://www.minivault.com/Photography.htm).

Ah, but if you wanted a needle bag and the one that you had your heart set on needed to be sewn, rather than knitted? Or wanted to add an embroidered design to it? I want a permanent photobox setup of wood. Being willing and able to cut and glue models implies no such interest or ability in woodworking. There are definitely some great plastic or even cardboard photoboxes around but any of them would be quickly destroyed in my zoo ^_^ And in any case, if I get to paint the fiddly bits on hubby's models, he gets to wield the hammer and saw. My husband just hasn't realized that I will be wielding the hammer soon (to bonk him on the head) if my promised photobox isn't delivered as it is now almost a month past my birthday!

Drahzar: Do you have any new pictures of your models? I remember seeing your GG standard bearer and liking the blue, but I haven't seen anything else from your VC army.

You're right, the needle bag I want is nicely sewn and I can buy it from the knitting shop in town...oh, I mean, that was a hypothetical statement...

It's a very good point. While there's part of me that would love to learn resin casting, it's not something I see developing the abilities for any time soon.
