Subject: DROP PODS ?????

Guys, this may have been posted before so I'm sorry if people have already talked about it. I don't play Space Marines, so I don't know all their vehicle rules. What's the deal with the drop pods? Can anyone tell me the rules for these things. They look totally cool, and I saw them in person at Games Day LA. They are very well built, and I would like to start a SM army with all the free stuff you get in the new box set. Can anyone help me one how these work, and how the rules play? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The rules will be in the new Codex Space Marines due out soon. Same price and weapons as a rhino; deepstrikes and is open top.

They use the deepstrike rules, with the exception that troops inside can't roll on the mishap table. If you land in bad terrain, the dp is moved back until it's safe. Tac squads, dreads, and many other troops that can't DS, can still use a drop pop.
Half your prop pods come in turn one, rest in reserve, similar to Deathwing assault.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

So you can wait to land these on turn 3 or 4 filled with troops to take almost any objective. Why wouldn't everybody use these. They seem to make it almost easy to win games. You beat the guys head in with some long range shooters in turn 1 and 2 then drop your pods and take their objectives. It almost seems easy?

One of the drawbacks of droppods (until the new codex) is that typically your army comes in piecemeal, and you do not get to choose what turn they come in or which units you get. From my personal exprience I have watched a droppod marine army land one or two squads a turn infront of my entire Tau army only to see each of his units get focus fired each turn, nothing that landed got a second turn on the board. It is a horribly big risk that sometimes does not pay off and ends with the marine player never doing anything but picking up models.

They do still scatter, and you can't be absolutly sure when they will come down, and if the other guy is already on the objective and positions correctly you may not be physically able to be close enough to contest.
Yes its a good trick and opens a lot of possibilities. However its never a sure thing.

lots of rabid fanboys are talking about buying 10 pods and making an all-frop-pod army - I'm sure we'll all be sick to death of pod armies in a few months, and then they'll suddenly vanish after some really good anti-pod tactics are discovered
It is a really nice model, such a shame my orks can't use them... well, I could put wheels on one but that would look pretty strange even for orks...

A lot of people talk about new army configs, but it will be interesting to see just how many actually show up. Pods are still probably 30-35 bucks each. Thats a fair chunk of change to get 8-10 of them. Also since there is an offical model now, the standard $6.50 PVC mock-up won't be allowed at GTs or even some RTTs if they take a stricter rule guidelines.
